CDZ Trump’s plan to broaden deportation rules could cost billions and hurt the U.S. economy, experts say

Your OP refers to immigration enforcement while your title says Trump is broadening the rules.

You're half right; he's merely enforcing laws. Same thing Bill Clinton did.

The sweeping immigration enforcement outlined by the Trump administration could cost billions of dollars to execute, cripple the American economy, and possibly present a humanitarian crisis the likes of which the country has never seen, experts say.

only if they REALLY DO IT. Its like the sex laws in New Jersey------
on the books "MISSIONARY POSITION ONLY"-------imagine if
they REALLY tried to enforce it

The tricky part is the "they" in "if they really do it." The sections of the government responsible for the necessary activities are directly under Trump's control and the deportation program is a core element of his national policy, popular with his supporters, the conservative movement, and Trump backers in the Congress. For this reason, it seems logical that the moves announced so far are just the beginning of Trump's carrying out his campaign promises.

The program will have staggering implementation costs, as the OP suggests, and so will require funding support from Congress, where the Trumpistas do not have enough votes without help from more moderate Republicans. That's where matters may get tricky. In addition, there will have to be very large scale efforts by the DoJ and the courts, neither of which have pro-Trump power bases. Things can get bogged down for years there.

We are now in the very novel situation of a de facto three party political system: Republicans, Democrats, and Trumpistas. The exact outline of the new policy is still very much up in the air.

That's the problem with Trump policies. There's still "up in the air", nothing is written down except some unconstitutional Executive Order.

Trump signed an Executive Order hiring 15,000 additional border guards and enforcement people. Except where is his congressional appropriation, outlining hiring costs, logistics, equipment and training needs, and facilities, as well as processing stations, and housing for prisoners during processing.

In the meantime, Trump's original deportation EO is having a chilling effect on travel and tourism to the United States. People are cancelling planned trips from outside the US, fearing they will be turned back at the border, or upon landing.

There may also be problems with harvesting fruit and vegetable crops in the US this year.

How much does it cost for welfare, education and crimes committed by illegal aliens and their children?

Exact figures on such a broad range of government services are almost impossible to calculate. One thing is clear: the pro-Trump forces are looking at the high end. The figure floated by Lou Dobbs and others of 318 billion was quickly debunked. Trump himself has come down to 118 billion. At the other end, estimates are a small fraction of conservative claims:

The Urban Institute put the net national costat $1.9 billion in 1992; a Rice University professor, whose work the Urban Institute criticized, said it was $19.3 billion in 1993. More recently, a 2007 report by the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office examined 29 reports on state and local costs published over 15 years in an attempt to answer this question. CBO concluded that most of the estimates determined that illegal immigrants impose a net cost to state and local governments but "that impact is most likely modest." CBO said "no agreement exists as to the size of, or even the best way of measuring, that cost on a national level."

Cost of Illegal Immigrants

It is also important to keep in mind that illegal immigrants do contribute to the economy, a dollar value independent of government expenditures but a significant factor in the over-all picture.

So you think enforcing existing deportation orders and arresting criminal aliens is bad for the economy?

More than the billions in cost to deport them. According to the OP, The total price tag would be $100 billion to $300 billion, the group estimates.

According to this, illegals cost the US $100 billion per year.

Expensive Aliens: How Much Do Illegal Immigrants Really Cost?

So in 3 years, the cost of deporting illegals will have paid for itself. Not as many government support services for them will be needed by then, more

jobs will be available for real Americans, and the taxpayer burden will be eased.

How many Trump fans want those immigrant jobs? Picking stoop crops and slaughtering cattle are even less fun than working as a housemaid or leaf raker. The fantasy that illegal immigrants are taking away those good-paying jobs is a rationale for nativism but it isn't real.

I'm afraid it isn't quite so simple. Both the multi-trillion dollar US economy and the millions of undocumented alien residents are large-scale, multi-faceted critters. The interactions between the two cannot be reduced to a simplistic helps/doesn't help dichotomy. Thinking at this level is useful for political invective. I've had enough of that.
