The gap between all American products shipped abroad and goods the US imported rose sharply in May, including with China.

The Commerce Department said Wednesday the trade deficit jumped by more than 8% to a seasonally adjusted $55.5 billion in May, its highest level since December. The balance for April was revised higher to $51.2 billion from original estimates of $50.8 billion.

The trade deficit with China surged more than 12% to $30.2 billion in May amid an ongoing trade dispute that has led each side to levy steep tariffs on thousands of products. That could irritate President Donald Trump, who views the trade balance as a scorecard of sorts against China.

What he lacked the fundamental capacity to understand was that this is an asymmetrical trade relationship: The Chinese government can get away with letting many of their people suffer far longer and significantly more than an American President can. So, quite possibly, they'll bide their time to see what happens in 2020 while also dragging Trump along. Or, they'll let Trump cave on demands out of political/electoral desperation. Either way, they have more control over this situation that he has.

It's not a zero sum game. It's not a question of IF something should be done, but HOW something should be done.

It doesn't look like China is intimidated. I realize that's pretty much Trump's only tool, but it doesn't work on everyone.
