I think we need to examine exactly what zero tolerance means in relation to apprehensions and deportations at or near the boarder. Does anybody really believe last year at this time the border patrol or the immigration courts just patted these people on the head and sent them on their way. That was not happening in the past and not now. Just as in past the vast majority that cross the border will plead guilty and they will be deported within 30 days. Just as in the past asylum cases will move slower through the court and for those with legal representation, much slower.

What the nation and media should be focusing on was the immigration raid in Ohio because evidence of illegally entry may well not be as evident as stopping a family walking across the border. For those with lawyers or those that claim they entered legally, then it will be immigration court not criminal courts that will be involve. This is where zero tolerance may have a real effect because this is where the deportations are delayed for months and years because immigration court consider the effect on the family, not just being in the country illegally.

The huge media attention to immigration, families being broken up and Trump appearing on TV declaring zero tolerance is likely to have some effect on those considering crossing the boarder. However, we won't know much until the Fall because crossings drop sharply from July-Sept.

Even if Trump manages a 50% increase in deportations this year, that would reduce the number of undocumented immigrants less than 1 to 2%.
