Poppycock! Trump voters support him because the alternative was hiLIARy. No "pop psychology" necessary.

Wouldn't it be nice to have a system where there was ACTUAL CHOICE? In other countries people can choose from a range of parties. In the US, two.

This is a good example of what the article points out.

"We have to eliminate the enemies of our society. Trump is the only one who takes our side; the rest are either on the other side or compromise with our enemies. Was David "authoritarian" in standing up to Goliath?"

"Defending" is one way of looking at it; it's an example of fear, fear of change, fear of people or ideas that are different. Feeling that you need some kind of savior to protect you from what you perceive as the terrible things that are outside the confines of your safe, known existence.

Society and culture change and evolve over time: that is an historical fact. You can't stop change. And generally, overall, it is for the better. For example, the role of women in society. Only a few generations ago, during the Victorian age, women in Western society were relegated to the role of chattlel, possessions of their fathers or husbands. They were persecuted if they did not remain virgins before marriage, they were expected to obey their husbands, husbands could easily get a doctor (who were all males) to sign a paper and have a tiresome wife put in a mental institution, women had very few legal rights, women did not go to university or only went to women's universities that prepared them to fill the woman's role in society, and the list goes on and on. Women were scorned and put in jail for demanding the right to vote. Change was vigorously opposed by the segment of society that does not like change, "Our way of life," as you state. But it has changed and it has been good, overall, for society. In fact, your group vehementaly opposes the restrictions on women in Muslim society. So, you obviously believe giving women freedom and power is a good thing. But, initially, your 'way of life' was intensely threatened by the role of women in society changing.

This is the point of the article, IMO, that the segment of society who are threatened by change are deeply fearful and deeply angry about those changes and thus fiercely embrace someone like Trump who vows to defend your 'way of life' and 'make America great again.'

What’s tragic and dangerous is that the fear and anger are completely unwarranted – no one’s ‘way of life’ is in need of being ‘defended’; no one’s ‘way of life’ is being ‘attacked’ or ‘threatened’ – it’s nothing but unfounded, wrongheaded perception.

    Classic rightwing authoritarianism:

Lies: The Left, which usurped power

Fearmongering: and turned loose criminals, moochers, and perverts on us

Attack ‘the media’: the images the partisan media presents

Playing ‘the victim’: they do believe they can minimize and silence us by their hostile tactics

To me, this issue is not only why they voted for him by why they are so fiercely loyal despite his behavior, such as the tweets that are so unpresidential, the contradictions (or lies if you will) in the statements we see almost daily, his less than virtuous sexual behaior, etc. Which goes back to the title of the thread, his so called 'joke' that clearly suggests no matter what he does, his supporters will stand by him.

    The Preppy Republic

In the 1960s, the doting fathers of these spoiled sheltered snobs got anti-majority legislation passed fitting their New Age Sewage agenda. This tiny clique should have no power at all, so any they took is usurpation. Whether they pretend to be Democratic or Republican, they block our way forward and must be removed.

    The Whirled Wad of Wub

As if that isn't specific. Quit being dishonest. It is a typical Netwit tactic to pretend you don't get it.

You should use your straws for the spiked Kool-Aid you drink, not for making strawmen.

Decade After Decadent Decade, Generation After Degenerate Generation

The friends of your terminally escapist and toxic echo-chamber are the enemies of the ascendant MAGA. The psychobabble quoted as unbiased bases its attack on buzz words that create a Pavlovian response within the author's clique. Sorry to disturb your privacy.
