Totally unacceptable

What debt to society did he have? How about repaying his debt to the children he molested?

Exactly how do you propose that be done?

I am trying to have a polite discussion with you...

and if you are not involved in that somehow, who the hell are you posting to?

do you believe in rehabilitation? It would seem that you do, to some degree.

and if you believe that, once criminals have paid their debt to society, that they ought to be treated no differently than any other citizen (whose "debts" are paid up), then do you support allowing them to vote?

I agree with RetiredGySgt's posts. Once a sentence is served, the debt to society is paid.

Doesn't have anything to do with rehabilitation. It has to do with the law. Whether or not this guy's sentence was just is an entirely different argument.

Our system is built a certain way. A Jury hears evidence and rules guilty or not. A Judge assigns punishment based on our laws if someone is found guilty. Our Government, Be it Federal State or Local can NOT create laws that punish people outside the rulings of a court because they were previously convicted of a crime and have served what ever sentence was mandated by law and the courts.

You don't like the sentences available? Make your State or the federal Government change them. THATS how it works. The Constitution is clear on this issue. The legislative nor the Executive can punish people with out a Court and ruling involved.

The 5th Amendment is clear. Once a person has served their debt as ordered by a court their liberty can no longer be taken from them WITHOUT another ruling from a COURT. he 8th Amendment is clear as well. Cruel and Unusual Punishment is forbidden. Denying someone the ability to live in any city or town, to shop or travel freely when no longer being punished by a COURT ruling is Cruel and Unusual. If a court rules 8 years, the State doesn't get to create a law that in effect makes it a life sentence outside a Court ruling of that punishment.
