Senior Defense Ministry official Amos Gilad said on Tuesday that Egypt views Hamas as a national enemy and a threat to its regime, and is now more willing than ever to fight against the ongoing smuggling of arms into the Gaza Strip.

"Egypt demonstrated extreme tolerance toward the Israel Defense Forces' activities [in Gaza]," said Gilad, who is Israel's top negotiating official on matters with Egypt. "Even today, Egypt is being very strict on Hamas and is not prepared to give the group anything - [including] the opening of the Rafah border crossing.

Gilad said that Egypt's determination against smuggling was unprecedented, saying even the international community has never demonstrated such willingness to curb the illegal flow of arms.
Gilad said it remained to be seen whether these intentions would pan out, but he was optimistic that Israel and Egypt were on the same page regarding the smuggling threats..

No doubt Egypt is influenced by the US and the EU to cooperate with Israel, but I believe a larger reason is that Hamas' actions in Gaza puts Egypt in the position of having to defend itself against criticism from the Arab street in Egypt as well as elsewhere and of guarding against the Islamist influence of Hamas strengthening the same kind of movement inside of Egypt. If Hamas can be neutralized, these problems go away.

Actually, if you stopped the cash flow, Egypt would completely dissinegrate and turn into a third world country where their most basic needs wouldn't be met... much like Gaza. Egypt doesn't want that for its people, so in order for Egypt to survive, it must make peace with the West and Israel.

I don't think it's about money. At least not only about money. I think that Hamas and other radical groups try to destabilize moderate regimes. Egypt has it's own fundie problems and it doesn't need Hamas terrorists smuggling weapons in and out all the while having their own people

Didn't you notice that Egypt and Jordan were uncharacteristically supportive of Israel during the Hamas operation? They hate Hamas, too and don't want them in their country either. It's in their own best interests for Hamas to go the way of the dinosaur.

Ah, yes, good times! Imo, Hamas can be neutralized by cutting off all smuggling and making sure no foreign aid gets to Hamas so that all aid comes through NGO's. This would weaken Hamas' support sufficiently that they would have to hold on to power by exercising brutal force that would cost them whatever support they still had in the Arab/Muslim world. It wouldn't be quick and it wouldn't be clean, but over time I think it might work.
