Oh and just to needle some here, you could have thrown "Atlas Shrugged" on the nominated list. LOL Mid 20th century cyberpunk... or at least an apocalyptic view of the future.

Great thread topic BD, both a trip down memory lane and it makes me want to go to the library.

Rep coming your way.

There's a site called BestFantasyBooks.com, which I'm betting they have monetized (more fools they, if not). Lots of scrolling to get to info, as opposed to a simple list.

#1: A Game of Thrones (George R.R. Martin)

#2: The Malazan Book of the Fallen (Steven Erikson)

#3: The Name of the Wind (Patrick Rothfuss)

#4: Lord of the Rings (J.R.R Tolkien)

#5: The Black Company (Glen Cook) NEW

#6 Gormenghast (Mervyn Peake)

#7: The Blade Itself (Joe Abercrombie)

#8: The Way of Kings (Brandon Sanderson) NEW

#9: The Farseer (Robin Hobb)

#10: Lies of Locke Lamora (Scott Lynch)

#11: The Wheel of Time (Robert Jordan)

#12: Cold Fire Trilogy (C.S. Friedman)

#13: The Long Price Quartet (Daniel Abraham) NEW

#14: The Etched City (K.J. Bishop) NEW

#15: A Sword of Shadows (J.V. Jones)

#16: Acacia (David Anthony Durham)

#17: Elric of Melinbone (Michael Moorcock)

#18: The Darkness That Comes Before (R. Scott Bakker)

#19: Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell (Susanna Clarke)

#20: Chronicles of Thomas Covenant (Stephen R. Donaldson)

#21: American Gods (Neil Gaiman)

#22: Abhorsen Trilogy (Garth Nix)

#23: Memory, Sorrow, Thorn (Tad Williams)

#24: Magician: Apprentice and Magician (Raymond E. Feist)

#25: Dresden Files (Jim Butcher)

#20 is the one that kicked me into the fantasy genre. #25 is the one I most look forward to hearing from, these days.

This list really has nobody to recommend it. I'd like to know who the writers themselves most highly recommend.

I am a big fan of both C.S. Friedman and Tad Williams' Memory, Sorrow and Thorn. I haven't read much of Williams' other works, so I can't say if he's always good or if that series in particular was just exceptional. Friedman, I've enjoyed all her books, the Coldfire series was very good and The Madness Season is a great stand alone.

Sci-Fi Lists - Top 100 Sci-Fi Films

And I've been more of a movie buff lately. And I've seen 80 of those. Actually was pretty impressed... but didn't like that it included comic book movies, even though I like em.

I've seen 80+ of those movies as well.

It's not a well-ordered list. Some of the movies that I've seen were complete crap (Starship Troopers being one glaring example) and some simply should not have been included as sci-fi (Young Frankenstein? Spaceballs? Those are comedies, not sci-fi!). I hate how highly this and other such lists rate Terminator 2, which I thought was little more than a pale imitation of the original with some flashy (for the time) cgi. Star Wars ep's 1-3 being not only on the list, but ranked as high as 21, tells me that whoever compiled this list has horrible taste. Those movies were as close to blasphemy as you can come with filmmaking.

There are quite a few other complaints I have, and I could probably come up with movies more deserving to be there. I'll just leave it that I disagree strongly with the list. :)

Feedback? Ooh! Same site, their take on Fantasy:

Fantasy 100 - Top 100 Fantasy Books

I don't like the inclusion of comics on a best book list. :(

I'm sorry. :(

Can you find a list that you think is more comprehensive?

LOL, it's not your fault!

Just thought I'd also mention I'm a fan of Raymond Feist. I recently read almost all of his books again (a few for the first time, some for the third or fourth time). He's not my favorite author, but he definitely spins a very readable tale.

I've heard that about Mr. Feist. Some people are good at spinning a good tale, even if eff-all everything else about their writing is horrible. I believe that accounts for the Twilight series. :)
