i grew up watching sports in the 60s and 70s. There was an appreciation of all aspects of a sport. There was balance and fair completion

Today...

Baseball is about Homeruns. Shorter fences, juiced players, favorable strike zone. Nobody cares about a pitching matchup, hit and run, stolen bases, bunting

Football is about passing for touchdowns. Fantasy stats. Shootouts. Used to be there was a balance between offense and defense, a balance between the running game and the passing game

Basketball is about shooting 3s and dunking. Defensive play, passing, teamwork are things of the past

Today's fans don't know what they are missing

Ah, the 60's.
Great time to be a sports fan.

For three years 64-67 we lived just across the Niagara (about 7 miles north of the falls) and so we were able to pick up Hockey Night in Canada broadcasts from Hamilton and Toronto TV stations. Back when there were only 6 teams in the NHL, it was fantastic.
Our 5th grade teacher brought in a TV and let us watch the 1964 World Series during class (Yankees-Cardinals).

Willie Mays became my younger brother's favorite baseball player after seeing him on the Donna Reed Show.

My parents took us down to a local Cleveland Chevrolet dealer to have our picture taken with Jimmy Piersall when he played for the Tribe.

I also still have my Lou Groza autograph, I forget which department store brought him in to attract customers.

The good old days. Must have been 1961 when my mom walking home from the bakery got JFK's autograph when his motorcade stopped and he got out to meet-and-greet and he signed her box of cup cakes.

Overall it was pretty cool. Then '68 came around and everything seemed to go to hell starting with MLK's assassination.

No hockey? Only sport I watch now. Going to a Wild game this weekend.
Fast paced, hard hits, very little stoppage of plays, and only sport that puts up with the occasional fist fight. I live in the state of Hockey.

hockey went down the tubes when they started wearing helmets.
Kind of agree. But incidents like this of my childhood idol, led to that. I was actually at the game with my Dad that ended this players career with a brutal eye injury when another played purposely hit him with his stick the very second both left the penalty box for a beach clearing brawl.

i get that, but in my opinion the use of helmets and masks made everyone freer with the sticks, leading to more serious injuries.

back in the day, you knew payback was gonna be a bitch

and, no, i still haven't forgiven the stars for teddy green

Yeah. It isn't the same. The player in the link Henry Bouche was a native American known for his long black hair and headband and attacking the ice as a warrior.
