In Iowa, Second Thoughts on Obama

By JEFF ZELENY
WILLIAMSBURG, Iowa — Pauline McAreavy voted for President Obama. From the moment she first saw him two years ago, she was smitten by his speeches and sold on his promise of change. She switched parties to support him in the Iowa caucuses, donated money and opened her home to a pair of young campaign workers.

But by the time she received a fund-raising letter last month from the Democratic National Committee, a sense of disappointment had set in. She returned the solicitation with a handwritten note, saying, “Until I see some progress and he lives up to his promises in Iowa, we will not give one penny.”...

In few places did people get a longer and closer look at Mr. Obama than in Iowa, a swing state home to deep strains of both conservatism and liberalism. Mr. Obama was a constant presence here during the formative months of his candidacy. Many voters have pictures of him on their mantels, looking him in the eye as they took a measure of the man and the politician before giving him a crucial victory in the caucuses....

Comeon Annie, this is a Republican who claims to have voted for Obama. Much like people who call into C-Span on the Democratic line claiming to be something they are not... for effect.

I'm sure some people are disappointed on the progress of healthcare and jobs but are still willing to give Democrats a chance. Let's see how the 2010 election plays out before trying to determine the direction the entire country is taking.

Really should read the article, Sarah. It's more than one and there are warnings too regarding Democratic party members and their concerns...

Are there elections every November?

If so, is there any reason for this. or is that just the way it is?

What a pain in the ass.

I read enough of it to get where you're headed. The Democrats don't really need the warnings just yet. Republicans haven't done anything to show voters that they are ready to become viable and actually work to get elected.

They just have this sense of entitlement.

I voted this morning. We have local elections and issues. I voted for casinos again, not that it will pass here in Ohio but we can always put our two cents in.

Do you do this every November (I mean vote, not vote about casinos)?

Just about. We do have mayoral elections which are important. This time we only had a couple of council member type votes and prosecuter plus 3 issues. I really don't think it's a pain in the ass, I like to vote.

I must admit tho if the casinos weren't on the ballot this time, I would have passed. I'm not even from this town. I get up early and run down there in any kind of weather if there is something.

With that many issues to vote on, there's no way I'd be able to be sure that I know what all the candidates stand for and therefore which ones to vote for.

I actually know some of the council members in the town I'm from. You're right, I do not know any of these people or what they stand for.

So how do you make up your mind? Or do you only vote for people whose positions you know?
