I don't see what's wrong with the traditional rules. My grandfather owned a small retail store back in the day, he had very strict rules about selling cigarettes. A kid definitely had to have a note from his mum before grandpa would sell him a pack of Pell Mell.

All this bullshit is just a bunch of hot air IMhO.

Eh, I'm not real excited about this issue. The furthers I'll go is saying I figure as long as we are eligible to get drafted at 18 or get to vote at 18 you should be able to smoke or drink at 18. Those rights and obligations should move as a unit.

You can legally sign a loan agreement at 18 but that only shows who REALLY owns you

We need more smokers to keep Obamacare solvent. Besides the $1.01 federal tax on smokes, we need more $1400 insurance penalty smokers so womens can keep getting their free birth control.

Good points.

Cigarette taxes are needed to pay for health care for children as well.

Maybe putting the ads back on TV might be a good way to increase the tax receipts to pay for the programs. Women have come a long way baby, to get where they got to today, do we really want to eliminate free birth control?

Must be 21 to smoke tobacco, but smoking pot is okay at any age.

CRAZY.

Age limits never stopped any kid from obtaining cigarettes and liquor.

In a lot of lib cities, smoking tobacco outside is considered "offensive", but toking on joints and engaging in sodomy aren't.

The world is turned upside down

Agree, there has to be one age of majority.

It amazes me how little people think of voting when they are OK with 18 year olds doing that but not smoking or drinking.

Plus it gives using them an air of rebellion.

I fondly remember the added excitement of drinking in a bar under 21 and wondering if the place would get raided that night.

Yup. I remember going to the Blue Mirror titty bar in DC (a favorite of Marion Barry's :auiqs.jpg:) at age 16 with a manufactured ID. We were all over the nightclubs back then.

We had 4 bars in College, the first let you in with a note from your mother saying you were 21, two required a 1/2 decent chalk job. The last was the "senior" bar that only let you in when you were over 20. (they could see through the chalk job)

I didn't start drinking until College. Engineering will do that to a person.

Ask any smoker--most start in junior high.

You make BK's point. Kids in junior high and high school drink and smoke at high rates. Current laws don't change that, and changing the age to 21 isn't going to make a diff IMHO. Smoking is one way that teenagers can really show their individuality and cheese off adults.

Personally, I'd rather see a kid smoking instead of engaging in sodomy as a minor. At least we have legal chantrix and nicorette to convert kids off of ciggies. Many states have outlawed conversion therapies to get kids off of anal sex
