Donald Trump’s pick for Secretary of Education looks like another establishment Republican to me.

Betsy DeVos, a Michigan Republican and charter school advocate, has been chosen by President-elect Donald Trump to head the Education Department.

XXXXX

According to the Detroit News, DeVos is a member of several groups that support controversial Common Core state curriculum standards — but she clarified on Twitter where she stands.

Many of you are asking about Common Core. To clarify, I am not a supporter—period. Read my full stance, here: Q+A – Betsy DeVos

Tinkering with the ED hoping to make it work better will not cut the mustard. Shutting down the Department of Education is the goal. So let us pray that Betsy DeVos is a lot more trustworthy than the late Terrell H. Bell (1921 - 1996):

30 years ago, Ronald Reagan called for the termination of the Department of Education. But instead of disappearing, the Jimmy Carter creation has become a federal leviathan with no signs of abating in growth.

Reagan's Secretary of Education Terrell H. Bell thwarted Reagan's and the Christian right's plan to do away with the cabinet level bureau. Bell, an educator by profession, was instrumental in publishing a report on the national status of our schools. Bell had the National Commission on Excellence in Education, which he created in 1981, prepare a document in 1983 called "A Nation at Risk: The Imperative for Educational Reform."

Betsy Devos is clearly not as good as Senator Sessions and General James Mattis. She might turn out to be okay —— if you happen to be an establishment Republican —— but Michelle Bachmann would have been the better choice.

Michele Bachmann said she would turn out the lights over at the ED. That one statement sealed her fate in media circles. The current candidates engage in doublespeak when they talk about the Department of Education as did every presidential candidate since 1979 except Ronald Reagan.

This sounds good, but it is miles away from abolishing the Department of Education, and a universe away from ending subsidies for Higher Education:

President Trump will sign an executive order Wednesday to start pulling the federal government out of K-12 education, following through on a campaign promise to return schools to state and local control.

That's great news! It probably deserves its own thread.

If the OP needs to tinker with ED he should talk to his doctor.
