Head of the United Nations/African Union Mission in Darfur (UNAMID), Joint Chief Mediator for Darfur, Mohamed Ibn Chambas pledged to persuade rebels to join the peace process in the region.
“It is time to end the fighting and seal a comprehensive agreement in Darfur," he said.
Chambas warned of the spreading of militias and arms in the hands of ordinary residents, in addition to the continuing banditry and crime, which he said pose a threat to locals.
In a statement, the UNAMID chief said that the mission was not launched to fight anybody but to protect civilians and keep the peace, stressing the peacekeeping troops’ ability to protect themselves against any attacks. He noted that UNAMID is operating under UNSC Chapter 7.
Chambas said the ongoing national dialogue in Sudan will encourage all to join peace. He reaffirmed his keenness to involve major rebel movements in the Doha document for peace in Darfur. The Joint Chief mediator further demanded UNAMID peacekeepers to remain alert. He assured local residents that the mission will spare no efforts to ensure that local residents live in security and resume normal living.
