It seems to me that anybody who would be afraid to answer the citizenship question is probably not in the country legally. And since illegal immigration was just barely becoming a problem in the 1960 census when the question was first omitted, there wasn't as much purpose in it as there is now.

Even by the 1970's, the Carter Administration was beginning to fight the illegal immigration problem by making it punishable by law to knowingly hire an illegal--employers were required to obtain three positive proofs of residency and citizenship from all new hires. Of course a cottage industry immediately sprang up to provide phony IDs for people, and we employers found the requirement so inconvenient when we needed to put somebody to work immediately that we fudged on it quite a bit. It was poorly enforced and eventually ignored. So far as I know, the law is still on the books though along with tens of thousands of others that are mostly ignored.

But not inquiring about citizenship is a late 20th Century thing and no judge should have any authority to dictate what the census can and cannot ask. If they can ask how many bathrooms we have in our homes, they sure can inquire about citizenship. And it wasn't illegal to inquire about it as late as 2010. And the question only asks about citizenship and not whether a person is legal or illegal. Nobody here legally should have any problem answering it.

That's despite the fact that back on September 28, 2011 Obama admitted this [1]:

"...the statistics are actually a little deceptive because what we’ve been doing is with the stronger border enforcement we’ve been apprehending folks at the borders and sending them back. That is counted as a deportation even though they may have only been held for a day, or 48 hours sent back. That’s counted as a deportation."

Yesterday, Department of Homeland Security secretary Jeh Johnson confirmed how deceptive the statistics are [2]:

Or look at the total number of homicides in those years. Per the FBI, there were 67,642 murders in the U.S. from 2005 through 2008, and 115,717 from 2003 through 2009. Per the GAO, criminal aliens committed 25,064 of them. That means they committed 22% to 37% of all murders in the U.S., while being only 3.52% to 8.25% of the population.

Conclusion: criminal and illegal aliens commit murder at much higher rates than all inhabitants of the U.S. – at least 3 to 10 times higher.
