Three arrested, accused of illegally feeding homeless

Before the knee jerk hysteria kicks in, think about it. It seems like a reasonable law. You either need a permit or have your homeless party more than 2 miles from city hall. Is that such a foreign concept?

Remind me why you need a permit.

I hate being on the other side....shudder

For gatherings of 25 or more permits are necessary. A City ordinance like this is not uncommon.

You know, I'd never thought I'd see a bunch of Social Cons defending Food Not Bombs.

what is so strange about us defending people who were trying to feed others?

The organization is generally made up of anarchists, socialists, hippies, communists, etc, etc, etc.

I volunteer with them fairly frequently.

Why does that matter? If they do good, Ill support them. As I would think any good conservative would. If they don't we will work to oppose them and bring about good.

Just because you disagree with someone doesn't mean you cant work together on common goals.

Well, that's great. They're a wonderful organization. I'm just a little surprised, that's all.

Food Not Bombs tends to be made up of anarchist punks and self-styled "revolutionaries". The "Che" T-shirt crowd. Generally the same people I see mentioned in threads here about "thugs" at protests.

A political cynic might consider that Florida is under special scrutiny by the Soros tax exempt propaganda foundations because the governor is a popular republican. The organization responsible for the misunderstanding about city ordinances is as left wing as you can get and the media is already in the area covering the sensational murder trial.. It's a perfect setup for a left wing propaganda coup.

However, this does remind me of those people who get fined for putting money in other peoples' parking meters to be nice.

Obviously, most here have never had to go to work through a large crowd of homeless folk waiting for their morning feeding.

But, yeah, it's assholery. Just points out the cities lack of control over the homeless if they have groups of more than 40 living in the parks. At least spread them out.

Members of Orlando Food Not Bombs were arrested Wednesday when police said they violated a city ordinance by feeding the homeless in Lake Eola Park.

Jessica Cross, 24, Benjamin Markeson, 49, and Jonathan "Keith" McHenry, 54, were arrested at 6:10 p.m. on a charge of violating the ordinance restricting group feedings in public parks. McHenry is a co-founder of the international Food Not Bombs movement, which began in the early 1980s.

The group lost a court battle in April, clearing the way for the city to enforce the ordinance. It requires groups to obtain a permit and limits each group to two permits per year for each park within a 2-mile radius of City Hall.

Arrest papers state that Cross, Markeson and McHenry helped feed 40 people Wednesday night. The ordinance applies to feedings of more than 25 people.

"They intentionally violated the statute," said Lt. Barbara Jones, an Orlando police spokeswoman.

Since when does being charitable require permission from almighty government? Typical bureaucratic douchebaggery. I wonder how much real crime was taking place in Orlando while the jackbooted Gestapo was rounding up the prodigal sons.

OUTRAGEOUS!!!!

It's time for the good people of Orlando to topple the regime that has that much arrogance.

why?

seems all i read these days are self made Randists libertarians who have levitated themselves in this economy via pulling up on their very own bootstraps

according to their doctrine, they need not bother with these loosers, nor should the gub mit, their stance should be letting them all die stacked like cordwood in the streets

slacker problem solved!

Remind me why gatherings of 25 or more need a permit. The fact that it is common does not make it right.

Crowd control, keeping the peace - I don't know . For crowds of 25 or more in public a permit is needed. They fed 40 and they knew the rules.

Our town has a similar ordinance, it's about crowd control. This group was making statement , they could have done it properly and fed everyone often. They wanted the publicity more than they wanted to help the needy is my opinion.

Since when are Republicans social cons? That's usually the domain of the left.

If you are talking about the right, from your inaccurate label to your puzzlement, it shows what you know...

Why do people need to be controlled by the government? Ive been at parties with many more than 25 people and no one was running wild.

There's a certain % of people who will literally defend anything government does.

I don't know. I don't make the rule but I also don't break the rules and I don't get angry when the police enforce the rules.

The police let everyone eat before the arrests - no one was harmed. The hungry ate and those who wanted to get headlines got headlines.

"Headline getting" shouldn't be necessary, you should be able to feed the homeless wherever you damn well please, or however many of them you want, however many times a year you want to.

Yes of course it's a law, and like many laws, an immoral and stupid one.
