But of course, there's Good News hidden behind that Sad Reality:

The surge in strays — estimated by provincial officials to number around 1.25 million — is

ironically linked to what officials say is an improvement in some elements of daily life in Baghdad, a city that for seven years has been struggling to return to normalcy after the 2003 U.S.-led invasion to topple Saddam Hussein.

Officials with the provincial veterinary directorate said that with open-air markets and bustling city life returning, the dogs are able to find more food and are having bigger litters.

Hell, they can even Attribute it to guy in Power now if they wanted to.

It's a hard luck life for dogs.

Those of us with dogs that we love probably don't realize just how lucky our canine friends really are.

Same thing for cats.

The average life of a feral cat is, I am informed, less than 9 months.

The last cat I put into the ground died at 16 years.

My current cat who had been abandoned by its own mother and was found dying from fleas and malnutrition in the woods is now about 8 years old.

No puppy mills.

The number of breeder dogs produced each year is nearly the same number as the dogs enthanized every year.

When you pick a breeder dog you condem a mutt to death.

If the breeder dogs demand fell more mutts would live.

A pure bred dog is no better than a mutt.
