This election is going to be won or lost on the credibility of our justice system. The real fight in this election is not so much between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton as it is between the FBI and the Department of Justice. The FBI has always prided itself as an apolitical organization charged with a mission to apply the law of the land equally to all citizens regardless of political status or personal fortune. The Justice Department on the other hand has become so contaminated with politics and ideology that it no longer serves the common good with respect to the equal application of justice.
This is why James Comey found himself in a position where he appeared to be speaking out of both sides of his mouth when he said Hillary Clinton was extremely careless with national security but no reasonable investigation would find her guilty of anything. You see, the Department of Justice is Comey’s boss and that boss was telling Comey not to pursue an indictment in the Clinton national security breech that resulted from her illegal personal server and the emails that originated from that server.
This election is about the very soul of our nation and the justice system that is the heart that goes with that soul. Comey found himself between a rock and hard place because he is the face of the FBI and the rank and file of that organization who answer to Comey take the FBI’s mission and reputation very seriously. The boots on the ground, the Eliot Ness types who put in long hours of grunt work in service to the people were up in arms over what they saw as an affront to the traditions and history of the bureau. Comey’s desk was piling up resignations over his ill-advised attempt to procure a bizarre solomonic resolution to a serious issue that was holding no one accountable. Comey was in effect cutting the baby in half to remain subordinate to his boss while still appearing to do his job.
Comey came under severe pressure by career soldiers in the bureau who saw his decision as an act of bad faith and an abandonment of the core values of the FBI. When the Anthony Weiner case came to light it offered Comey a chance to repair his mistake, undo the damage and rescue the image of the FBI as an organization that regards no one as above the law. But the Department of Justice that oversees the FBI has become poisoned with political corruption and this could be the undoing of the United States as a democracy based on the principles of blind justice. There is no doubt that the Department of Justice has been blocking the investigation of national security violations and intimidating the FBI to stand down from its historical and honorable purpose.
This is the kind of suicidal political malfeasance that brings down societies and it is part and parcel of just about every banana republic that ever existed. When a political party becomes so arrogant and detached from the people it represents that it threatens the fundamental system that is in place to protect them it is up to the people to reject that party by moving in a direction that brings about an abrupt change.
This really is the last chance.
