Thinking about a new build

Hey if you have the cash for have fun. I don't need or desire anything that "new", I'll stick with my Phenoms for now. :D

trying to figure out how to justify the deal, we have a rule .nothing more than 500$ without talking about it.
Just bought a lap top in sept.
Maybe Xmas?

I was gonna say $500 is the lowest end i7 chip you can get, luckily I looked, didn't realize the non-extreme editions had dropped so much in price. I'm still a cheapskate when it come to this stuff, for me anything new is a year and a half to three years old that way I buy $2800 lap tops for $400 and $400 chipsets for $80.

When I rebuild my wife's system here's what I'll probably use, she uses it for work, limited games and internet surfing. The rest of the parts I already have existing in her current system. I'll stick with the DDR2 memory for obvious reasons.

The Athlon quads benchmarks are better than the Phenom IIx2 so the cost ratio is acceptable with the Athlon quad costing about $20 more than the Phenom x2. Neither my wife or I am interested in box lighting, don't want it so a simple, usable box is all we need. The only other thing I might add in my system is a blue tooth but only after I've researched it some more and determined if it's a benefit to me.

In anycase looks like I will be doing a change on the mobo to another ausus
ASUS Crosshair IV Formula AM3 AMD 890FX SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard
Which Im running now.

You dont see the benefit to having all the available ram?

64 bit OS gives me 16 gigs, on her machine that's enough. Like I said she doesn't do high graphics gaming, doesn't download video or audio and all she's concerned with is it works and works fast enough for her. Hell the machine I'm running on now is topped out at 4 gigs (32 bit OS) and is still lightning fast but then I'm running Ubuntu, not Windows. Later when DDR3 is as affordable as DDR2 I'll switch out the mobo and chipset.
I'm not interested in the latest and greatest, I don't have a need for it.
I'm still using an IBM Lenovo T61 laptop, 1st generation duo-core which I'll probably switch out in about a year to a 3rd gen duo with a 17+ inch screen. That should only set me back about $300 for a very good laptop.

Why spend the extra when your L3 cache won't work any better than using the quad?

The demands I put On spell check have bogged down the 32 bit machine. It have it is time to move up to 64 bit.

Good lord! What are you using? Do you regularly do a registry clean or defrag?

The main two places you want to put your money with home builds are in the mobo and power supply based on your projected use of the system. An ATX mobo crossfire and hyper-threading that can take anything from a duo to a six or eight core with lots of PCI, USB and alternate plug in slots.
A power supply of 500W or greater (with surge control) means you don't have to change it out when upgrading to a better chipset, mobo or combination.

That was called a joke.
The mesh that I used for the avatar I sport was 1.5 gigs in maya
mr-fitnah-albums-avy-picture928-mekka.gif

and the machine was nearly under water .
Maya which is my favorite 3D program apparently only benefits from the intel architecture.
I need more than 500 watts as I use a lot of harddrives and Sli and will move up to cross fire .
