Think kidnapping is bad in Somalia? It's worse in Mexico

Somalia is a hot spot for kidnapping, as the rescue Wednesday of two hostages by U.S. Navy SEALs has spotlighted. But Mexico, Afghanistan and Venezuela are even worse, according to a company that tracks threats across the world.

Somalia and Kenya together ranked ninth in the world for kidnapping foreigners from October to December of last year, with two kidnappings a month, the Britain-based company AKE found. (Somali waters, where piracy has been a persistent problem, ranked fifth, with 13 crew members taken a month.)

It may seem surprising that a private company is gathering these statistics. Taryn Evans, an analyst at AKE, said that governments do release data on kidnapping, but they are often skewed for political reasons. Even if governments don’t fudge the numbers, many kidnappings are never reported.

The results from official sources aren't so believable: Canada had the highest kidnapping rate in the world as of 2009, according to the most recent United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime data. So to get better information, the British company uses on-the-ground experts to track kidnappings.

Here are its most recent rankings for the worst kidnapping spots in the world:

Mexico
Venezuela
Afghanistan/Pakistan
Colombia
Somali waters
Gulf of Guinea waters
Philippines
Sahel region
Somalia/Kenya
Iraq
Democratic Republic of the Congo
Nigeria
Sudan/South Sudan
Yemen

Kidnapping thwarted by Mexican townspeople...

Mob lynches two suspected kidnappers in Mexico
11 February 2012 - Security officials in Mexico say two men have been killed and a third injured by a mob for allegedly trying to kidnap a youth.
Local residents in Chalco, near Mexico City, beat the men and forced them into a car, which they then set alight. Police have detained at least a dozen residents they suspect of the lynching.

Kidnappings are common in Mexico, where criminal gangs make money by abducting people for ransom. Police described how around 600 locals armed with bars, clubs and bottles surrounded the three suspects and dragged them to the town's main square.

Municipal police officers managed to save one of the men, but residents locked the other two in their car, doused it with petrol and set it alight. In a travel warning issued on Wednesday, the US State Department warned of the rising number of kidnappings and disappearances in Mexico.

Analysts say accurate figures for the number of kidnappings are hard to come by, as many abductions only last for hours or a few days, until the ransom is paid. Most are never reported to the authorities for fear of reprisal from the criminal gangs who carried out the kidnapping.

We are no longer free to walk in the streets because of what is happening,” she yells.

Demonstrators behind her tape cardboard crosses to a fence in front of Mexico’s National Palace. The names of slaying victims are scrawled with black magic marker on each one.

“I want the impunity to end,” a leftist lawmaker says, blaming Mexican President Felipe Calderon’s five-year-long crackdown on drug cartels for the surge in violence.

Too right and it's getting worse. Sooner or later this will pop!

Is Mexico City safe from drug cartel war — or the next target?

Mexico

If you can't even leave your hotel, what is the point of going to Mexico? there are plenty of places to go in the US anyways, like Vegas, Atlantic City, Florida etc etc

Phoenix is the kidnapping capital of the US!

Last year a couple I know went to a resort in Acapulco. The whole resort was ringed by armed guards. That's why resort grounds are considered safe.

Sometimes the most unlikely places make good vacation spots, I went to visit a friend of mine in Houston last year and had the time of my life, they had awesome night clubs, sexy women and fantastic places to eat, and all of this is very cheap.

I don't go on vacation. I don't like it. I don't like to travel. A few days off staying home is the best I can do. I move. I moved from California, to Nevada, back to California. I may be forced to move to London, but not if I can get out of it.

Yes, but Mexico is at least fighting it! The reason kidnapping has increased is because the cartels are losing a ton of their revenue that had flowing from the drug trade. Believe it or not they have come a LONG way in this battle. I hope the Mexican people have the courage to get fighting. Calderon is one of the good guys. WE MUST SUPPORT HIM!

The Mexican economy is growing and doing great. If they could keep clipping away further at the cartels power, then they could be in their way to becoming a semi-1st world nation like Chile!

Crime is high. And kidnapping is a cottage industry.

Colombia has one of the best economies in Latin America! The reason they have such crime is because of LEFTIST douche bags terrorist trying to overrun country. They used to be funded heavily by the Soviets, now they have the kidnap and drug trade!

The Dominican Republic is quite a successful country.
Somalia, Haiti, and Colombia have no markets, free or otherwise.

When Zimbabwe was Rhodesia it was the breadbasket of Africa. Enough food was produced in Rhodesia to feed the entire continent AND export. In 1979 the international community backed the native population to end white rule and free markets. How well has that worked out?

Socialism doesn't work. It has never worked. The end result of socialism is Greece, Italy, Spain, soon to be followed by England and France, perhaps the United States as well.
