It's the first Monday in October and those 9 people wearing black robes are officially in session once again. (They actually sometimes hang around the offices in the time off period)

They're only taking on 40 cases, half the usual. And, there's something to remember that one of the candidates – I can't remember who – said – SCOTUS does not make the law! They don't even repeal it. All it does is provide “judicial review” of laws enacted by legislative bodies. Article III gives the court “judicial powers” which are outlined in Examples of Judicial Powers
But, it does NOT have the “final word.” If it finds a law unconstitutional, the appropriate legislative body may amend it or pass another, following the rules laid down by the court.
