MinnPost - Unemployment benefits: not until Bush tax cuts pass, Senate GOP says

Unemployment benefits extension avoids holiday cutoff for 2 million Americans, says White House, which agreed to extend Bush-era tax cuts for everyone, including the rich.

The inaction means the imminent loss of unemployment compensation for some 800,000 out-of-work Americans, with nearly 2 million long-term unemployed expected to be affected by Jan. 1, according to the Labor Department.
US Labor Secretary Hilda Solis, speaking Wednesday at a press conference organized by Democratic congressional leaders, said that by next spring, another 6 million unemployed workers will lose benefits if Congress does not act. “Millions of families are going to struggle to put food on the table or put gas in the gas tank,” she said.

Besides extending the Bush tax cuts, the deal passed by the Senate -- which was backed by the White House and Republican leadership -- extends unemployment benefit funds to the states for another 13 months.

Senate Minority Whip Jon Kyl has raised eyebrows by insisting that emergency aid to unemployed people -- what he called a "necessary evil"

It's Unanimous! GOP Says No To Unemployment Benefits, Yes To Tax Cuts For The Rich

To be sure, a few moderate Republicans have supported the idea of extending unemployment benefits without paying for them. But, as Kyl implied, they are the distinct minority.

I've pointed out that Republicans held millions of American hostage by theatening their unempoloyment benefits unless the rich get their tax cuts. These right wingers have been calling me a liar.

GO ahead. Prove what happened a few months ago didn't.

And please, run on the idea that helping unemployed Americans (who, according to Republicans, could be under cover drug addicts) is nasty socialism. Use that in your campaign. How would you phrase it? al Qaeda uses "death to America". What should Republicans use? Because if Americans helping Americans is a "bad thing", then why are we defending America? When Americans stop helping Americans, then America ceases to be. Is that really the Republican goal?

Or in short : "give us what we want or you're like the Iranian hostage takers Carter saved the world from."

Yea,...

They are not happy unless it's one sided slanted in Obamas favor, bottom line is elections have consequence "And obama did not care to make that clear after the healthcare passage". So I agree with the president here, elections have consequence and you cant have what you want anymore, now you have to go through us to get anything done, which means real compromise, not the phony one sided bullshit the Dems have been pushing recently, they found out the hard way on the debt ceiling. Americans are mad, and at your party, not the tea party, but I guess another ass whoopen in 2012 is what it is going to take for you to see it. You dont have to like it, but you will have to just deal with it.

Calling the Bush tax rates tax cuts is extremely ignorAnt,

long after its been pointed out they ceased being cuts a long time ago,

dont ya think?

Hello?

LIAMD :cuckoo:

Don't you lefties get dizzy with all the spin? Obama extended the Bush tax cuts 12/17/10 (for two years)while democrats still held the majority in congress.

Yes Obama caved. I said so at the time. He caved because the one flaw in his character is the lack of guts.

The GOP were in the position to force all the tax cuts to expire if Obama didn't cave. He should have called their bluff.

They won't admit the GOP held millions of unemployed hostage for Bush tax cuts

They don't need to admit it.

It's on the record.

You can't seriously expect people who are living a lie not to lie, dude.

Who is this they that will not admit that?

By the way, unemployed Americans do not need endless unemployment benefits, they need jobs. If you are really worried about helping them why aren't you demanding the Democrats deliver a real job plan instead of sitting around waiting for the Republicans to do something they can shoot down? Why aren't you demanding that Obama do something besides play political games with Republicans in order to look good for the base?

Good post!!

By the way, wealthy Americans do not need endless tax cuts, they need to pay their fair share. So as you can see this is a double edged sword that cuts both ways. Kinda sucks having the power to stop legislation, doesn't it? It means you have to accept blame for inaction.

.

so essentially, another case where Obama Got rolled, and you are proud of this?

The problem I see here is that this guy doesn't know how to play the game, and when he gets snookered, he whines.

Wait, before when Obama didn't want the cuts he was being unreasonable and uncompromising but since he did he got rolled. Smh

the majority of the mass media, education, the Fed bureaucracy, the presidency, the senate....

Is such a weak force in aMerica that just the republicans in the house get to tell you what to do?

Freakin awesome made my day there is hope yet.

Are you trying to say that the only flaw in your almost perfect man is he is a coward? Does that mean you do not consider lying or breaking promises to be flaws? If so, that explains a lot about how you can defend Obama, or any politician.

Do you expect me to ignore your stupidity simply because you complimented me?

There was a very strong argument from within the Obama administration not to raise taxes during a weak recovery, which was what we were in when the Bush tax rates were scheduled to expire. If Obama had stuck to his guns the result, according to many people including the Nobel Prize winning Paul Krugman would have pushed us into a double dip recession. That is why Obama "caved" on the so called cuts, he was smart enough to realize he was wrong. If you prefer to see him as weak for that, feel free, I prefer to give him some credit for intelligence.

For the record, people making $200,000 dollars a year are not rich. If Obama had actually tried to raise taxes on rich people he might have had a decent chance because many economists thought increasing taxes on people making $1 million would not have had a significant affect on the recovery.

As for why I do not expect the Republicans to come up with a jobs plan, I know the government cannot create jobs or demand. We have to batten down the hatches and ride this out, and the less the government does to help the sooner it will be over.

Anything else?

You won't admit Obama and the democrats don't care how bad the economy gets, as long as they can blame it on the Republicans......
