Youngsters arguing over a kickball game touched off two days of gunfire that left one man dead and two others injured, Montgomery police said.

The shootings occurred Saturday and Sunday at 1627-B Northgate Drive, an apartment inside Crown Point Town Homes off Lower Wetumpka Road.

Adults apparently became involved in the kickball argument Saturday and their dispute didn't end, said Capt. Huey Thornton, police spokesman.

Officers were first called to the apartment about 7:15 p.m. Saturday. They found Ross Pettiway, 48, of 1620 Sheffield Road who said he was hit in the right arm by shots fired through the closed front door.

Pettiway, who was visiting relatives, was taken to Baptist Medical Center South with injuries that were not life-threatening.

Police returned Sunday about 4:15 p.m. on a report that two people had been shot.

They found Jeffery Lyndell Burnett, 21, of 1611-D Northgate Drive and Crystal Shephard, 24, who lived at the apartment, wounded.

Both were taken to Jackson Hospital. Burnett was pronounced dead about 4:45 p.m. from a gunshot wound to the upper torso. Shephard was treated and released for three non-life threatening gunshot wounds to her lower back and both arms.

A 16-year-old boy was taken into custody for questioning, but was released.

Thorton said police didn't charge the teen because he may have fired in self-defense.

"Burnett fired into the residence on Saturday and was back at the residence on Sunday, when he was shot by the 16 year old," Thornton said.

Witnesses said Burnett was with two other unidentified men when he fired at the home Saturday and Sunday. Police said several different types of shell casings were found at the scene.

Makes you wonder if those involved had a history before this...
