DEMOCRATIC RESPONSE TO THE PRESIDENT'S WEEKLY RADIO ADDRESS

JANUARY 21, 2006

SPEAKER: U.S. SENATOR HARRY REID (D-NV), SENATE MAJORITY LEADER

REID: Good morning. I'm Harry Reid of Nevada, the Democratic Leader of the United States Senate.

I went to college in the 1960s and studied government. I remember discussing a quote by Lord Acton -- "Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power tends to corrupt absolutely."

It's been many years since I graduated college, but I finally understand what Lord Acton meant.

Republicans today control the House of Representatives, the Senate and the White House. They have absolute power, and it has corrupted their Party and led to the culture of corruption that we now have in Washington, DC.

There's the former Republican leader of the House of Representatives, admonished three times for ethics violations and under indictment for money laundering.

There's the White House, where for the first time in 135 years a White House employee has been indicted.

There's Karl Rove, who is under investigation. There's also the man appointed by President Bush to be charge in charge of hundreds of billions of dollars in government contracts who was led away in handcuffs because of his dealings with Jack Abramoff and others.

And then, there's the Republican "K-Street Project," which grants special interests the ability to "play" in Republican controlled Washington -- - as long as they are willing to "pay."

There is a price to pay for this Republican abuse or power, and it can be seen in the present state of our union. Special interests and the well-connected have been rewarded by Republicans... while everyone else has been left behind.

What is the state of our union in 2006?

We have a national security policy that protects Halliburton's bottom-line with no-bid contracts but does not protect our troops with body armor.

We have Vice President Cheney's energy policy that helped Big Oil make 100 billion dollars in profit in 2005, but this same policy has families feeling the financial pinch every time they fill their gas tanks or heat their homes.

And then there is the state of the Medicare prescription drug program.

Democrats have always supported adding a drug benefit to Medicare, but nearly all of us voted against the Medicare Bill of 2003 because it was clear that President Bush's plan would help drug companies more than seniors.

Unfortunately, time has proven us right.

The state of the union today is that we have low-income Americans begging for their prescription drugs, and seniors going without any coverage.

America can do better. We need to fix Medicare and do it now.

Senate Democrats have a plan to address the Medicare crisis, and we are asking Republicans to join us. Our plan would allow those in their golden years to immediately get their prescription drugs, not confusion and red-tape.

The fact that Republicans call their drug plan a "benefit" reminds me of another lesson from college, this one taken from George Orwell's book, 1984.

The President has botched the Medicare program so badly that it doesn't resemble a "benefit" for most seniors. Calling it that is Orwellian doublespeak, naming something just the opposite in order to cover how unpleasant it really is.

Republicans have been giving us doublespeak for years. They speak in platitudes about helping Americans, when they are really helping their special interest friends.

When they wanted to let energy companies release more pollution into the air, they called it the "Clear Skies Initiative."

When they wanted to let loggers cut down more trees and weaken environmental laws, they called it the "Healthy Forests Initiative."

Their "Leave No Child Behind Act" is leaving children behind every day.

And my favorite Republican doublespeak is when they wanted to give tax breaks to their special interest friends -- even though it meant adding more than $50 billion to our deficit, they called their effort the "Deficit Reduction Act."

It is time now for the President to put an end to this pattern of deceit, and he can do so when he gives his State of the Union address at the end of this month. The American people need to hear him denounce the Republican culture of corruption, and tell us how he is going to reform our nation's capital.

Honest government is the Democrats' top priority, and we unveiled our plan for reform on Wednesday.

This legislation not only treats the symptoms of corruption, it also treats the disease. It eliminates cronyism like Michael "Brownie" Brown at FEMA. It ends pay-to-play politics like the K-Street Project. And it creates an Office of Public Integrity that will strictly enforce the law.

The honest leadership we seek is not a partisan goal. It is the key to a stronger union. When leaders are accountable to people, not lobbyists, there is no limit to what America can do.

We can be energy independent, have affordable health care and a strong economy. All it takes is a commitment in Washington to put progress, not politics, first.

That's the government Democrats are fighting for, and we're asking everyone to join us, so we can have a state of the union as honest and strong as the American people.

I'm Senator Harry Reid. Thanks for listening.

REID: Good morning. I'm Harry Reid of Nevada, the Democratic Leader of the United States Senate.
Sorry to hear that, where do I send the flowers?

.....

Republicans today control the House of Representatives, the Senate and the White House. They have absolute power, and it has corrupted their Party and led to the culture of corruption that we now have in Washington, DC.

Hey, Harry baby, look in your Webster’s Dictionary --- look up “popular mandate”. The American people put those representatives in those seats, you lost, we won, that’s how American Democracy works, get over it. As for your charge of absolute power, that is a lie, and you’re a big fat stinking liar. Why? Because you know as I do, that the Republicans do not have absolute power. If they had, they wouldn’t be pussy footing with you assholes over the filibustering rule, you bastards wouldn’t be able to delay the confirmation vote on Judge Alito, you wouldn’t have a prayer on an investigation into Abramoff’s activities.

Your problem is that you and your party prostituted yourselves to the Communists, the Socialists, the extreme Left back in the 1960s. Furthermore, you’ve sold out to Big Labor, the feminists, the environmentalists, the radical gay rights crowd, the abortionists and the Castro lovers. You’ve, in effect, managed to alienate yourselves from Mr and Mrs. Joe Average. You did it to yourselves.

As for the culture of corruption charge, you have a lot of freaking brass to be throwing stones. Your party has as its members two of the most dishonest slimebags that ever disgraced American politics. One of them was the President of the United States, and the other is his so-called wife and my Senator. Even their marriage is a big lie. President Clinton was impeached for perjury, subornation of perjury, obstruction of justice and the list goes on. His wife was involved with questionable, if not illegal activities. During their eight year reign, we heard nothing but scandal coming out of the White House.

Jesus H Christ, Harry, there you go again. First off, the investigation on Karl Rove is being conducted, but no one reasonably expects anything to come of it. And you know it, you lying son of a bitch. The charges against Tom DeLay may be more the result of guilt by association rather than the result of direct knowledge of wrong doing by his underlings.

Hey Harry, come on, it’s called LOBBYING. You should be one to talk, you lying snake in the grass. You Democrats never met a labor union you didn’t like. You even let them pick your presidential candidate in 2000! Not only that but you accept campaign contributions from individuals who are under investigation for racketeering, mob activity. You bastards, in order to get your freaking campaign dollars, helped raid the Upstate New York Laborers’ Pension Fund… a fund, by the way that my father was part of. You can’t even resist robbing a common laborer from Italy… talk about being a liar and a thief!!!!!

What is the state of our union in 2006?

Well, for one thing, we have a compulsive liar as the Senate Democratic Leader…..

We have a national security policy that protects Halliburton's bottom-line with no-bid contracts but does not protect our troops with body armor.

YOU LYING SON OF A BITCH!!!!!! You know that’s not true, either! The Clinton Administration awarded no-bid contracts to Halliburton, too. That is part of a policy that the Defense Department has been following and you yourself were approving of during the Clinton years. In order to save money on bidding for small jobs, the DoD awards a no-bid contract to a company e.g. Halliburton. The contract lasts for several years, then the meta contract is re opened for bid.

We have Vice President Cheney's energy policy that helped Big Oil make 100 billion dollars in profit in 2005, but this same policy has families feeling the financial pinch every time they fill their gas tanks or heat their homes.

Harry… if you told the truth, I swear I wouldn’t know you…. The 100 Billion dollars in profit had nothing to do with government policy but with the mechanics of the market. AND YOU KNOW IT!!!!!!! Prices went up because of Hurricane Katrina, Hurricane Rita and Wilma and because of increased demand for oil from China… Harry, you are either a liar or a complete moron when it comes to economics. Even more likely you're a lying moron. Do us and yourself a favor Harry, enroll in a freshman economics class at your local community college. Instead of boring us with your obvious lack of knowledge on economics, learn something about it.

Thanks to you anti-free-market policies, and the fact that your party is in the pocket of the American Trial Lawyers, the cost of prescription drugs is through the roof.

The only thing the Medicare prescription drug program does is expand the role of government at a crippling cost to our young people who will be stuck with the bill. But what the fuck do you asswipes care? You’ll be long retired by then living on a super generous pension that is probably tax free as well as any left over campaign contributions to use as your own private piggy bank. You feign compassion, but many of us are not fooled. We know what a big fucking creep and swindler you actually are!!!!!

The fact is, oh great bag of shit, that the environment is now cleaner than at any time in the past 30 or 40 years. The policies you refer to are actually used to manage forests, not exploit them. And I think you know it, too. Again, you show just what a godless son of a bitch you actually are.

Their "Leave No Child Behind Act" is leaving children behind every day.

Also known as “No Teacher’s Union Left Behind Act” --- this just ensures that the NEA and AFT, your two biggest campaign contributors, will get lots of cash by compulsory unionism and have the American taxpayer foot the bill. I gotta hand it to you Harry, you really know how rob people….

And my favorite Republican doublespeak is when they wanted to give tax breaks to their special interest friends -- even though it meant adding more than $50 billion to our deficit, they called their effort the "Deficit Reduction Act."

A Democrat that is complaining about government spending!!!! Wow! You must be kidding. You weren’t worried about the deficit when you passed the Medicare reform bill, tried to get Nationalized Health Care foisted on us, nor when you shouted down the Republican attempts to privatize the Social Security system and ensure its solvency… but during this speech, you feign concern…. Harry, you’re not only a liar, but a shameless one at that!!!!!!

It is time now for the President to put an end to this pattern of deceit, and he can do so when he gives his State of the Union address at the end of this month. The American people need to hear him denounce the Republican culture of corruption, and tell us how he is going to reform our nation's capital.

Speaking of “pattern of deceit” When is does this radio address end?

Honest government is the Democrats' top priority, and we unveiled our plan for reform on Wednesday.

If this speech of yours is any indication, honest government isn’t anywhere remotely near your agenda…. In fact, the Democrat agenda and honest government aren’t even in the same galaxy, let alone on the same page.

This legislation not only treats the symptoms of corruption, it also treats the disease. It eliminates cronyism like Michael "Brownie" Brown at FEMA. It ends pay-to-play politics like the K-Street Project. And it creates an Office of Public Integrity that will strictly enforce the law.
The Democrats answer to everything, create more bureaucracy… I have a better answer, how about this TELL THE TRUTH instead of putting your political spin on everything!!!!!

You just got finished telling us about out of control government spending and here you go trying to expand government!!!! Either you can't add Harry or you're engaged in Democratic Doublespeak... which is it?

The honest leadership we seek is not a partisan goal. It is the key to a stronger union. When leaders are accountable to people, not lobbyists, there is no limit to what America can do.

We can be energy independent, have affordable health care and a strong economy. All it takes is a commitment in Washington to put progress, not politics, first.
More buzzwords in a single sentence than is allowed by law. “Energy Independence” – means drilling for oil on American soil, including the NAWR, it also means allowing oil companies to keep their profits so that they can invest in research into alternate energy sources. Affordable health care --- means allowing the free market to reign instead of government price controls, it also means tort reform so that lawyers don’t drive drug companies out of business, it also means changing patent law so that drug companies have more time to get back the money they spend on research and development of new drugs. "Strong economy" --- that means more tax cuts, reduced government spending, relying on monetary policy, rather than government spending to get the economy back on track and weaning the government off of foreign capital investment to finance more Democratic hair brained programs that have no effect and no end.

That's the government Democrats are fighting for, and we're asking everyone to join us, so we can have a state of the union as honest and strong as the American people.

I'm Senator Harry Reid. Thanks for listening.

And thanks Harry for finally shutting the fuck up. Next time you want to shoot off your mouth, do us a favor, go out to one of the testing grounds in your state and babble there. You’ll save the taxpayer some dough.

Hey!!! And not a word about Iraq! What a breath of fresh air. After three years of your persistent droning on and on and on about it, you've finally stopped! Either your OCD medication is finally starting to work or this is your admission, although implicitly, that you were actually wrong and Bush was actually right about Iraq! Hallelujah!!!!

During their eight year reign, we heard nothing but scandal coming out of the White House.
And scandal glossed over by the MSM, not invented by the MSM!

The MSM - when they're not reporting the news, they're making it up as they go along!

Reid is moron. A left-wingnut run amock. Instead of being as obsessed with the Republicans as the Dems are, they need to clean their own dirty laundry first.

They've got one Senator who was a member of the KKK, and yet another who is guilty of running like a pansy and causing the death of one of interns. That's not to mention "Ms Whitewater," the shyster lawyer. And who was the dingbat the was going to punch Bush out if he criticised Blanco?

Icons of virtue, each and every one.

As an aside, the extreme right is considered as a big menace, but to the best of my knowledge, Nazis never tried to infiltrate our government and overthrow it.

The extreme left (i.e. communists and socialists) on the other hand, did just that. But hey... don't pay any attention to the man behind the curtain folks, he's just trying to take your freedoms away...

But now, instead of overthrowing the government, we're supposed to vote them in and let them do whatever they please.

I think what really bothers Harry Reid (as well as the rest of the bunch) is that now they can't do what they want now, and someone is looking over their shoulder.

Well... boo-hoo Harry, you're grounded, go have a tantrum someplace else.

I think what bothers them is they can't get past the part where we don't vote them in just because they tell us we should. They just don't know how to respond to people questioning and/or rejecting their intellectual superiority and knowing what's best for us.

Close your eyes .... this won't hurt a bit.
