Fact Check: Mitt Romney's '47 Percent' Claims Wildly Inaccurate

It is true that 46 percent of American households did not pay federal income taxes last year, according to the Tax Policy Center. But that number is unusually high, in part because of the recession -- and a majority of that 46 percent still paid payroll taxes. Only 18 percent of American households paid no income taxes and no payroll taxes last year. It is largely low-income seniors and very poor people that legally don't pay federal income taxes or payroll taxes, according to the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities and the Tax Policy Center.

It was also inaccurate for Romney to claim that those who don't pay federal income taxes would vote for President Obama "no matter what." Nearly all states with a high percentage of Americans that don't pay federal income taxes vote Republican in presidential elections, according to the Washington Post.

Moreover, Republican policy -- on the part of Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush -- has pushed to move poorer people off of the federal income tax rolls, as noted by the Washington Post's Ezra Klein and Newsweek's Matt Zeitlin.

As for entitlements, contrary to Romney's portrayal, more than 90 percent of entitlement benefits go to the elderly, seriously disabled or members of working households, according to the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities.

Romney stood by his comments on Monday, telling reporters that though his comments were "not elegantly stated," Obama's approach is "attractive to people who are not paying taxes."

So your saying that people who were never going to vote for Romney to begin with should not vote for Romney? You're kind of making his point

my sister's entire class of student's parents are receiving some form of welfare and they are ALL right wing, religious, republicans who pay no income taxes, 53% of the seniors in Florida, who worked and paid taxes their entire lives, may not pay income taxes now, vote republican....

Military men at war, are also part of that group who pay no income taxes....

Romney insulted a lot of his own base......and insulted the people who get paid poorly.... most of these people are working people, not people sitting on their hands doing nothing while collecting TANF....

He acted like a pompous ass, a wealthy pompous ass....one of those people described in the book of James who put up the rich and put down the poor.

and might I remind you, we are in a recession with many unemployed not due to something they did, not by choice, and would GLADLY work a good paying job over piddley unemployment.... any day of the week

Mitt insulted a whole heck of a lot of people that are republicans, the very rich who pay no income tax, the very poor religious right, and seniors....

He was generalizing using government statistics. I dont really think 47% are that committed to the DNC platforms.

Romney pulled the ''class warfare'' card dear, with his pandering to his $50,000 a plate donors and belittling half of American workers and or retired seniors....

it was a gaffe....and class warfare on his part....at least it certainly comes off that way...to me, and many others on the right as well...other than the limbaugh crowd....

He didn't insult anyone. He merely stated the facts. He needs to make it the centerpiece of his campaign going forward.

Obama= Socialism, Nanny State, Stagnation, Dependency
Romney= Capitalism, Liberty, Growth, Opportunity

the choice is pretty fucking easy for me......

Romney = Bush's growth. I'll pass.

maybe someone will answer this on this thread:

WHY is it that republicans defend romney on taking every legal tax credit, using every legal loophole including 'off shoring'' to lower his income tax obligation, while disparaging those workers that are not among the wealthiest for using every legal means to lower their tax obligation?

Really? When are Republicans disparaging anyone?

Have you not listened to the whole tape of romney's 50k a plate fund raiser dinner?

have you not read the crap posted by your allies on all of these romney threads regarding this???????????

have you not read the threads and posts from the right that say people who manage to have zero tax obligations should not be able to vote?

Are you really that gullable or that committed to the commiecrats, Romney was talking about the 47% of voters who are going to vote for your Dear Leader Maobama no matter what, so there is no reason to spend resources on them to attempt to change their minds.

He said he will go after the 6-7% in the middle that he might influence. So just keep telling your lies, intellegent people know better and the rest don't really matter.
