which everyone missed. 61% of voters in a referendum in Puerto Rico voted to apply for statehood. The resident commisioner and outgoing governor will present the results to President Obama (who has promised to sign a statehood bill if a majority of Puerto Ricans support it) and to Congress. There is nothing special about statehood bills in Congress; a simple majority is sufficient.

So what say you, welcome to the 51st state? Can DC be far behind?

I don't see DC ever becoming a State. Though I've long thought we should still allow states to join the union.

Obama has advocated for this statehood. Dems can pick up electoral votes. Maybe some seats in Congress...
