The term "free market", when used towards the US economy, doesn't mean free of government regulations. It means businesses are allowed to conduct their business and set their prices and wages with as little government interference as possible. Does this mean no government interference what-so-ever? Of course not, and no one is calling for that.

What we don't want are things like the government telling businesses where they can and cannot set up shop (ie. Boeing). Or government telling businesses how to make their product (ie. vehicle fuel mileages). Or telling consumers that they can't buy a safe legal product (ie. incandescent bulbs).

Government setting regulations to ensure the safety of workers and the impact towards the environment are fine and necessary, so long as the government doesn't take it too far.

So we want as little governemtn as we can without chaos. If you know anything about Calculus, it's kinda like finding the derivative. The limit is no government, and our curve tries to get as close as possible without hitting it.
