Recent polls have shown that most Americans believe that homosexuals are “born that way”rather than become gay as the result of environmental factors. In fact, perpetuating the belief that sexual orientation is innate has been crucial to the gay rights movement. According to the most recent Gallup Poll on the subject, 88 percent of people who believe homosexuals are “born that way” support the legality of same-sex marriage, while only 39 percent of those who believe homosexuality is the result of environmental factors support the legality of same-sex marriage.

So, what happens when science proves that homosexuals aren’t “born that way”? Perhaps we’ll find out. A new comprehensive scientific study of the biological roots of sexual orientation released Thursday proved that there no “gay gene” and that genetic factors are insignificant in determining sexual orientation.

The research, which analyzed data on DNA and sexual experiences from almost half a million people, found there are thousands of genetic variants linked to same-sex sexual behavior, most with very small effects.

Five of the genetic markers were "significantly" associated with same-sex behavior, the researchers said, but even these are far from being predictive of a person's sexual preferences.

"We scanned the entire human genome and found a handful - five to be precise - of locations that are clearly associated with whether a person reports in engaging in same-sex sexual behavior," said Andrea Ganna, a biologist at the Institute of Molecular Medicine in Finland who co-led the research.

According to Ganna, these genetic variances have “a very small effect” on sexual behavior, and combined, only explain “considerably less than 1% of the variance in the self-reported same-sex sexual behavior.” This means that non-genetic factors, including environment, upbringing, personality, and nurture “are far more significant in influencing a person's choice of sexual partner, just as with most other personality, behavioral and physical human traits,” according to the researchers.

    Dear The Purge
There is not a gene that makes people Christian either.
But that is a protected belief and identity that cannot be infringed upon by discrimination either.

That is how LGBT beliefs should be treated, as any other faith based identity, affiliation, expression or practice.

Christianity doesn't require proving it is true "scientifically", or proving it is genetically determined.

Why should LGBT require any such proof in order for people to practice and express their beliefs?

It is enough to claim belief in something to have such people defended from discrimination on the grounds of their faith based beliefs.

We'd do better to treat LGBT, Christianity, Constitutionalism, socialism, even global warming beliefs as CREEDS and not punish, deny, discriminate, exclude or violate anyone's beliefs, but consistently refrain from abusing govt to either "establish or prohibit" individual choice of CREED.

Don't establish any such beliefs through Govt, and nobody will seek to deny your free exercise and expression.

But if people continue to push to establish their beliefs while disparaging the equal rights and beliefs of others, that's where these fights are coming from to defend people against such violations. So let's call a truce, and agree to quit abusing politics to push political beliefs into govt at the expense of the equal free choice of others not to have their rights infringed upon or disparaged. Let's be fair and respect Constitutional equal respect, protection and inclusion for all people, regardless of religious or political beliefs.

I have no idea how my three children ended up the way they are. But the were not "blank slates" when they were infants. Each of them had unique personalities when they were born and they have not changed that much in their lifetimes. It wasn't genetics, I think, or environment either. I think there's a third factor that scientists aren't yet aware of.

Becoming a fudge packer is a choice.

    A bad choice.

    But still a choice.

Based on my research of movies and TV shows, men's sexual orientation is pretty much set in stone, but women can become lesbians at the drop of a hat and then they will make out in front of heterosexual men.

Nah. All are born with the capacity to be hetero. Most can treat gay as disgusting, know it's morally wrong, and not do it.
