The Navy does its best to get troops home for the holidays when it can, but this display at Norfolk Naval base is still more the exception than the rule.

Nine "Flattops," five aircraft carriers, and four amphibious assault ships, are crammed together here at Norfolk among smaller ships and nuclear submarines from December 20, Navy photos. The nine flattops alone, number more than all eight battleships at Pearl Harbor in 1941.

CV-69 is the Carl Vinson, CV-77 is the George H.W. Bush, CV-65 is the Enterprise, CV-75 is the Harry S. Truman, and CV-72 is the Abraham Lincoln. And, the amphibious assault ships, while nowhere as big, are also quite impressive as we don't see all those amazing hovercraft inside.

CVN-69 is the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower, not the Vinson. I served aboard Ike in 1979 - 1980 in AIMD dept. You really have no idea just how huge these ships are until you are standing there on the pier.
