First 5 Months of Year Were Planet's Warmest Ever
Paul Yeager

AOL News (June 16) -- April showers are supposed to bring May flowers, but this year, April global record warmth brought May global record warmth.

May was the warmest on record globally, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, following what was the warmest April on record. January through May was the warmest first five months of a year globally, averaging 1.22 degrees Fahrenheit above normal.

May temperatures (land and sea combined) averaged 1.24 degrees above the 20th-century average of 58.6 degrees, including the warmest land surface temperature on record and the second warmest sea surface temperature on record. NOAA's monthly temperature assessments are based on data that dates back to 1880.

Don't suppose you stopped to consider it has been one of the wettest years in a long time too. Water vapor is a major contributor to warming. Is there a corresponding increase in CO2 this year?

Hmmm...in CA we had the coldest combined period of April and May in decades.

Yes, but in areas of the globe where few if any people live, it has been really warm according to the instruments.

And that is easily manipulated via where the placements of the censors are. We don't have reliable past data for most of the planet - temps have been measured for an eensy beensy amount of time on a global scale.

2010: Warmest spring on record for Washington D.C.
The National Weather Service in Sterling, Va. released the following public statement yesterday:

... Record or near record warmest spring set in the Washington DC-Baltimore area...
Astronomical spring for 2010... defined as March 20 to June 20 in the Northern Hemisphere... was the warmest on record at both Washington National D.C. and Washington Dulles. At Washington D.C. ... the average spring temperature of 66.7 degrees broke the old record of 66.3 degrees set in 1991. At Dulles... the average spring temperature of 64.5 degrees broke the old record of 63.1 degrees set in 1991. Official climate records date back to 1871 for Washington DC and 1962 for Dulles.
At Baltimore... the average spring temperature of 64.0 degrees was just 0.1 degree shy of the all-time warmest spring temperature set in 1991. Official climate records date back to 1870 for Baltimore.

So wait, CO2 increased maybe 10PPM in the last year, are you saying that a 10PPM increase raises temperatures by at least 1 degree?

Current large greenhouses increase it to 1400ppm and the plants go crazy, and nobody has ever suffered ill effects. 10ppm... somebody drink a pepsi somewhere?

If this is true then good. Burn mother fucker burn.

Yes this year based on the data is pretty warm, but not every where was above normal. We in the Pacific northwest had one of the most sucking and wet springs on record. June has nearly 4.25" inches for June. Can we trust the Arctic area estimates of temperature? I mean we have a few stations over a large part of the world and we're expected to trust it. Yes the Atlantic is really hot, which could be part of the reason, but who knows.

CO2, and other GHGs, trap heat in the atmosphere, which causes the atmosphere to evaporate more water, which leads to more precipitation. And, of course, water vapor, although a feedback mechanism, is still the primary greenhouse gas.

Yes, the GHGs continue to increase, and continue to absorb more heat. Combine that with the natural ENSO cycle, and you get a lot more precipitation events. As predicted.

1957 has came and gone, ever hear of satellites, Mathew?

No complaints about that from me here in Maine.

It's nice to have a warm spring and summer for a change.

You stole our spring and summer. Yessirreeee...... that's it. Has nothing to do with warming or cooling, Portland, Maine took Portland, Oregon's spring and summer.

How about giving it back. We'll sue, Yessirreee......

KUWAIT CITY, Jun. 21, 2010 (Xinhua News Agency) -- A wave of scorching heat in the past few days pushed the highest temperature in the desert state of Kuwait to the record high of 54 degrees Celsius.

The figure was recorded in Matraba, in the north of the oil- rich Gulf emirate, local daily Kuwait Times quoted a meteorologist as reporting Monday.

The report did not specify the date for that record heat, and said the highest figure previously registered was 51.3 degrees in 1998.
