January 17, 1961, by President Dwight D. Eisenhower's farewell address to the nation in what is called his Military Industrial Complex Speech:

"In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military industrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist.
"We must never let the weight of this combination endanger our liberties or democratic processes. We should take nothing for granted. Only an alert and knowledgeable citizenry can compel the proper meshing of the huge industrial and military machinery of defense with our peaceful methods and goals, so that security and liberty may prosper together."

Ike was a great man.

The country could really use an Ike right now.

But were those losses necessary? It was a failure on many fronts, which to his credit, Ike was prepared to accept responsibility for. He never had to release that message though, as the invasion ultimately gained the foothold necessary, but couldn't there have been a better way?

It is the old “What would have happened if”. We can’t go back and try a different scenario in retrying history. What would have happened if we had not dropped nukes on Japan? Some people think that the war would have eventually ended with less loss of life. Some people think that the war would have continued and that there would have been more loss of life. Some people even think that the Japanese would have never surrendered. How do we best end the war with as little loss of innocent life as possible? That is the old question and we continue to try to thread the needle.

Matts, you were missing my point. That's ok, it was too obscure.

Really? His invasion plans on D-day cost 2,000 some lives in ONE DAY.

Big deal!

Mother Russia (PBUH!!) lost more men than that - in quiet sectors - getting the rations each day!

In fact Russia lost more men in one battle, Stalingrad, than America lost in the whole of WW2.

How would it (D Day) have been if you had been fighting 1939 Germans, instead of sundry Wop conscripts, shell shocked rejects from the Russian front, and the last dregs sweepings of Germany's military cellars?

They'd have gone through you, the Canadians, and the Poms, like a pqcket of Epsom Salts.
