The Vatican Just Put a Convicted Rapist Back in a Parish

Just what is it that the Vatican does not get about predator priests? Apparently a lot. Father Joseph Jeyapaul is a priest from India who admitted to raping two adolescent girls in Minnesota when he served the Crookston diocese from 2004 to 2005.

After being charged with the abuse, which included rape and forcing at least one of the girls to perform fellatio on him, he fled home to India, where he was eventually arrested on an Interpol warrant. He was then extradited back to Minnesota, where he admitted his heinous crimes and entered a plea bargain in which, in exchange for a lighter sentence, he copped to molestation of one of the girls.

Jeyapaul was suspended from the priesthood and served a year and a day in prison in Minnesota, then was deported back to India after his release last July. The Minnesota diocese where he worked also settled a civil lawsuit with the victims in which one accused him of systematic abuse in the confessional of the Blessed Sacrament Church in Greenbush, Minnesota, where he would then tell the girl it was her fault, that she had made him “impure.”

How much more proof would one need that the man cannot be trusted with minors?

Apparently, Jeyapaul’s rap sheet is not enough to kick him out of the priesthood for good. In February, the Vatican approved lifting his suspension from the priesthood and agreed that he could be reassigned to a new parish in India. That parish even made him the diocesan head of its commission for education.

I don't agree with this decision. This isn't a case that warrents forgive and move on. According to this article, Vatican Revokes Suspension Of Tamil Nadu Priest, Triggering Row, he supposedly is not to have an active role in the Church. Still, if he remains in the Church, he ought to be under constant scrutiny and never left alone with any youngsters.

By the way, I am a Catholic. And no, we Catholics don't all just blindly agree with the Pope.

so wonderful that they get to operate in immunity from the world.
He did a year. He's "paid his debt" to us. I wouldn't put him in a position interacting with minors, but he's got to work somewhere and if he hasn't been 'rehabilitated' he'll reoffend no matter where he is.

He may "have to work somewhere" but it could be in a monastery where he can have time to reflect on what he's done rather than a Parrish where he has a lot of contact with people. If his reputation doesn't precede him, he could still have contact with children of parents unaware. Or he could just be excommunicated period.

I agree he should not be in a position which puts him in contact with children. Being on an education committee doesn't mean he has contact with kids on a daily basis. It would be hard to believe the Church could be that daft, not after everything it has been through on this issue.

The problem is that it has been an on-going practice for many years for the Catholic Church to send these "errant" priests to "rehab" type places only to reassign them to another Parrish in another city or state only to have them do the same thing at the new assignment. There have been dozens and dozens of major scandals brought to light where neither the Bishops, the Cardinals, nor the Vatican has taken a hard, hard stand against pedophile priests.

I'm amazed that he actually served 1 year in jail. That is quite rare. Usually the Vatican intervenes and whisks them away before they can be held accountable. From your article it reads here:

“The Vatican under Pope Francis and the Bishop in India have both made the decision to permit this predator to continue in ministry after his conviction for child sex abuse and are promoting him as safe and trustworthy and holy,” Anderson said. “And as we speak, there are hundreds of children who we know trust him and believe him to be trustworthy.”

So yes, they intend to put him back around children and the parents will be told to bring their children and obey the Pope who thinks he is God (and isn't). Sick. Isn't it? What is sicker - is that the parents who are supposed to protect their children will remain in the RCC because they believe that they will lose their salvation if they leave Catholicism. Of course this is a lie - there is no salvation in Catholicism - but tradition and peer pressure will make sure everyone keeps their mouth shut and does what Rome tells them to do.

Parents don't look on all priests as pedophiles - most of them aren't. Parents of whatever faith go to their respective churches in the belief that the man or woman doing the preaching is someone worthy of being a preacher or priest - not a pedophile. Hell, parents send their children to school every day under penalty of law if they don't send them ... and look at the number of teacher/pedophiles who are popping up in schools from one end of the country to the other. Don't blame the parents - they're sending their children to school in good faith that they'll be safe there.

That's the problem with the license to sin 'Christian aren't perfect, just forgiven' bullshit.

Actually, the idea in Christianity and Judaism is not to sin. Everybody does, however, and when that occurs and they ask for forgiveness the idea is that they not continue to keep on committing the same sin.

The idea of all religion is to make lots and lots of money. The license to sin is a benefit of handing your money over. In the US it's $86B/yr.

They don't get any money from me ... so I guess I am having it my way.

You never pass up a chance to toss distain and disinformation around about the Catholic church and at all Catholics, do you, Jeremiah? The Pope is not God, nor does he think he is God. Catholics do not believe that you must be Catholic and stay Catholic to be saved. Your blatant lies about the faith of fellow Christians is sickening.

They ask for forgiveness and help from God to not repeat the sin. It is not a license to sin. It is a way of reminding us that we need God. If people choose to give money to a church, it's their money- and their business.

One is NOT forgiven if they PRACTICE sin. That means if you sin and ask for forgiveness if you continue to PRACTICE the same sin over and over you are not actually forgiven by God.

I may be wrong about this, but my theory is that all (or most) of these people who are so hell-bent on eradicating religion are those who (1) never went to church in the first place and know little to nothing about any religion, (2) want to go free-wheeling through life doing anything they please - and the more base the behavior, the better they like it, (3) somewhere along the way something happened in their life where God didn't answer their prayer with the answer they wanted when they wanted it ... therefore He became a cruel, heartless bastard and hated Him, (4) if they don't believe in God, then nobody else should - it's all a myth.

Belief in God gives many people something to live for - getting up in the morning, hope, comfort ... and acts as a conscience - so why deprive and ridicule people who are happy, content with their lot and strive to do better? It's that conscience - the haters don't want to feel any kind of guilt or regret for the bad things they do.

Just my opinion, folks.
