The US Solar Market Is Now 1 Million Installations Strong

“It took us 40 years to get to 1 million installations, and it will take us only two years to get to 2 million,” said Dan Whitten, vice president of communications at the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA)

Sometime around the end of February, the millionth solar installation came on-line in the United States -- a milestone that says as much about where the solar industry is going as it does about how far the industry has come.
“It took us 40 years to get to 1 million installations, and it will take us only two years to get to 2 million,” said Dan Whitten, vice president of communications at the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA). “This is a time to mark when the solar industry started to accelerate at warp speed.”
At the end of 2015, the U.S. solar market hit a total capacity of 27 gigawatts. That represents just 1 percent of the current U.S. electricity mix, but it could triple to 3 percent by 2020. This year alone, the U.S. solar market is projected to grow 119 percent, which represents an additional 16 gigawatts of new installed capacity and more than double the record-breaking 7.3 gigawatts added in 2015.
Over the coming weeks, SEIA will run a campaign called #MillionSolarStrong to raise awareness around the U.S. solar industry’s achievements to date. The campaign includes a social media “thunderclap” and a flagship event in Washington, D.C. on May 3.
“We want to open this conversation and let people know that we are now a part of the energy mainstream,” said Whitten. “We’re central to any discussion about America’s energy future.”

Solar has been in the news almost nonstop lately, the industry is starting to become mainstream finally. People are very slowly realizing Global Warming is real and it's way past time to act.

You're thinking of the oil business in Texas.

When you consider that air moves and jet streams and the like, explain to me why China burning American coal is better for the environment than it being burned here. We are spending billions to clean China's air before sending it on to Europe. This has nothing to do with air.

It is a ploy to redistribute wealth. Ours. To whomever wants it. They don't call it global warming anymore once solar flares were found to be the cause of warming and cooling. Now they call it climate change, a reparation to (Asia and Africa are next in line to win the lottery) others for the Industrial Age. And the UN wants the one hundred billion Obama promised. Which he will borrow from China at exorbitant interest to give to them. He'll hand the bill to our children and grandchildren.
How many lead pipes in Flint, potholes in Ohio, and bridges in New Jersey can you replace with the 100 billion Obama just redistributed to the UN, and the 150 billion Obama just gifted to Iran, and all the other gifts?

The rich are moving on, the middle class is dwindling into the welfare class and if this shit doesn't stop, America will soon be holding a tin cup, begging for crumbs. We will be easy pickings for a UN takeover.

Of course, it doesn't suit the purpose so ignore the many oil companies going bankrupt. And then skip down the road whistling zippy do-da.

Oil will be produced and will be useful, with no subsidies from the government.
End the government subsidy for solar and new solar installations will crash by what, 80%?

The private sector is doing most of it...And also oil, coal and natural gas have giveways given to them too. Why shouldn't we pay for our energy infrastructure? Are you this short sighted that you can't understand that it cost big bucks to maintain it.

The private sector is doing most of it

Yes. And without the government handouts, they'd do about 80% less.

And also oil, coal and natural gas have giveways given to them too.

Sure they do.

Why shouldn't we pay for our energy infrastructure?

We should. Unreliable wind and solar destabilizes our energy infrastructure.

PV solar and wind are doing great in the US energy market. Both are completely competative with coal and natural gas in many location. And have the advantage of no negative externalities.

U.S. Installs 7.3 GW in 2015, Set to Smash Records This Year
Updated March 9, 2016

The U.S. installed 7,260 megawatts (MW) of solar in 2015 to reach 27.4 gigawatts (GW) of total installed capacity, enough to power 5.4 million American homes. Thanks to a booming residential PV market and continued realization of the utility sector’s double-digit gigawatt project pipeline, 2015 was the biggest year yet in solar history. Despite this remarkable growth, the industry is set to more than double the amount of installed capacity in 2016.

Terrible news for, um, someone who has a bizarre thought that energy from the sun is 'evil' energy. That is one of the things you just can't figure out, why is anyone against any kind of energy? Other than the oil and coal companies, everyone else that argues on their behalf without getting paid is a fool carrying the water for vampires.
