In late October,1962 I was on one of many ships with the 4th Infantry Division in Havana harbor when the Russians started loading their missiles back onto their ships. That was a damn scary time and people today don't realize how close we were to a nuclear holocaust. I never want to go through anything like that again.

And it's not going to get any better. Trump began by hiring professions such as Tillerson and Cohn, dynamic people with years of experience, people with ideas, ready to offer the president advice that he certainly needed. However, Trump does not use advisers. He clashed constantly with these people. One by one, he's forcing these people out to be replaced by more pliable yes men. He wants soldiers that will carry out orders and above all be loyal just as he had in the Trump organization. That worked well in his business because he was a brilliant real estate developer. He knew value and had a keen sense of what sells, qualities that are critical to his business.

There is no similar between President of the Trump Organization and President of the United States. The President is not an idea man. He's a manager of idea men who uses his experience and knowledge in politics, international affairs, and government to evaluate recommendations and formulate policy which forms the foundation for his administration to builds on. None of this exist in the Trump administration. Policy is a collection of tweets and off handed comments by the president. The primary job of the Trump staff is to protect and defend the president.

It is not Trump's lack of experience in dealing with nuclear war that is troubling. It is his lack of ability to evaluate reactions to his actions.

Thank God, the mad tweeter didn't get his tweet off saying he was ordering military dependents out of South Korea.

Has any other elected U.S. President ever held the office as President without completing one term of an elected office? Obama has not completed his first term as a Senator. We have had Governor's become President, but they have all finished at least one term. Does anyone have more information on this?

Obama spent 7 years in the Illinois Senate in addition to 3 1/2 yr in the US Senate and about 3 years as a community organizer working on a number of campaigns. He also work as civil rights lawyer for 3 years. All toll he had about 13 years experience in politics and 10 years in government and 3 in law.

IMHO, appointment to political offices can provide good experience in government. Also service in the military at high levels where the person interface with government officials is also very good experience.

I don't believe developing real estate projects is good experience for the presidency. All leaders of large and important organizations have some skills in common: they need to be intelligent, knowledgeable about the relevant issues, able to manage a staff and able to communicate effectively to people inside and outside their organization. But the job of U.S. president differs in some important ways from the job of CEO. Because of that, presidents face challenges that CEOs cannot even imagine. I bet Trump would agree with this.
