Seriously, are we all so stupid as to believe the numbers without checking into the details? The amount of people counted as unemployed fell because they no longer qualify for benefits. Therefore the govt has no way to track them. Their benefits expired, nothing more.

Snip-
The Labor Department reported before the market opened that the unemployment rate fell to 8.6 percent last month, the lowest level in 2 1/2 years. Economists had expected the rate to stay at 9 percent. But a key reason the unemployment rate fell so much was that more than 300,000 people gave up looking for work and were no longer counted as unemployed.

Also seasonal temporary employment accounted for more than 50000 of the so called new hires. Those jobs will be gone in a month.

If UE benefits are extended again those not currently counted as unemployed will once again be counted resulting in a sharp increase in the UE numbers.

According to this article another 2 million will fall off in February resulting in a lower UE rate despite the fact that they won't actually have jobs.

But Congress will soon have to decide whether to continue funding Washington's share of the 99-week benefits program. Should it fail to extend the program, a further 2 million unemployed stand to lose their benefits come February. Americans Fall Through the Safety Net as Slump Lingers | Common Dreams

Ya think---:cuckoo: 350K just got booted off of their unemployment checks--and that amounts to a net gain of JOBS created--according to the Federal Government--:cuckoo::cuckoo:

Inside the jobs report are some less heartening numbers. Retail sales positions accounted for 50,000 new jobs, and those could simply be holiday hires who will be let go again in January. And part of the reason for the drop in the unemployment rate, which comes from a survey in of households, was that about 300,000 people stopped looking for work, not an encouraging sign.

The Obama sycophants are having multiple orgasms.
Come Monday, the lib media will report the unemployment rate. The lib pundits on MSNBC and CNN will blurt out the rate with great emphasis on the "eight"....

I realize that would really fuck with the GOP's agenda of keeping unemployment high, but thankfully it's not true.

Then you must also realize this thread wasn't intended for you. It is for those with half a brain or more. Only a fool would fall for the number manipulation, especially when the real facts are available for all to see.

no shit.

The unemployment rate has NEVER been calculated by counting the people collecting UI.

The numbers have gone down because people have given up, and are not actively looking for jobs, not because their benefits ran out.

I'll repeat, UI and the unemployment rate have NOTHING to do with each other.

look folks we are dealing with people who think the more people on food stamps means more jobs

Wrong.

Each week those qualifying for benefits have to file reports proving they have looked for work and where. Each week those reports are tabulated and thus the govt gets their numbers. When you no longer qualify for benefits you no longer fill out the forms, thus you are no longer counted. Doesn't mean the numbers actually improved, just means your off their radar.

No, you're still wrong. That's NOT how the unemployment figures are calculated.

Some people think that to get these figures on unemployment, the Government uses the number of persons filing claims for unemployment insurance (UI) benefits under State or Federal Government programs. But some people are still jobless when their benefits run out, and many more are not eligible at all or delay or never apply for benefits. So, quite clearly, UI information cannot be used as a source for complete information on the number of unemployed.

Actually that is exactly how it doesn't work. It is a very common mistake that people make that think that UI is connected to the unemployment rate, but they are not. Indeed as the previous poster stated the two are not related.
The numbers for the two while similar are different. The reason they are similar is because after looking for a job for 99 weeks (as required to get UI), that person may drop out after no longer recieving benefits and being unable to find a job for so long.

Thanks for the lesson. That seems even less reliable though.

You don't understand HOW unemployment is computed.

But you know...your complaint about unemployment statistics generally has validity.

A MUCH better measure of the employment picture is this:

What percentage of all POTENTIAL workers are working?

I am informed that currently 139.206 million people (58.3% of labor force) are employed.

That's pathetic.

I am already just trying to ignore all of this... In a month and a half people like RW and TM will be saying "Why did you Republicans have to destroy the economy again!!!!!!" when the temporary jobs are gone and when the media starts looking at the numbers for what they are...

You can only hide behind the fake numbers for so long before someone "breaks" the news... Then in one giant rush the media will be talking about how the UE % means dick because it's much higher than we are lead to believe.

We all know it's coming and no amount of Obama cock sucking or Obama hating will change that.

What I heard today is that if you were to use 2009's labor force (people employed + people seeking employment) and apply that to the number of people employed today, unemployment would be at 11%. I'm going to see if I can verify those numbers tomorrow but given the tremendous amount of people that have given up seeking employment this year, 11% seems about right.
