This article by Thomas Sowell speaks the truth about who caused the partial shutdown of our government operations. Keep in mind as you read it that Obama chooses what is shutdown and what is not. His choices are designed to punish the public and then rescue us from the 'tyranny" of the Republican House.

SOWELL: Who shut down the government? | Rare

Even when it comes to something as basic, and apparently as simple and straightforward, as the question of who shut down the federal government, there are diametrically opposite answers, depending on whether you talk to Democrats or to Republicans.

There is really nothing complicated about the facts. The Republican-controlled House of Representatives voted all the money required to keep all government activities going — except for ObamaCare.

This is not a matter of opinion. You can check the congressional record.

As for the House of Representatives’ right to grant or withhold money, that is not a matter of opinion either. You can check the Constitution of the United States. All spending bills must originate in the House of Representatives, which means that congressmen there have a right to decide whether they want to spend money on a particular government activity.

That says it all really. They cant believe they wont get their way. They are really afraid of it working.

Ha ha. Dumbasses.

It has already proven itself to be unworkable, expensive and making a liar out of Obama. Costs have gone up and are anything BUT affordable. People have lost jobs. Working hours have been cut. Doctors have literally QUIT their practices. Workers have lost the insurance coverage they were told they could keep and are now forced to buy more expensive coverage on the "exchange".

The only way that Obamacare is working is the way Obama intended...to help bankrupt the country.

That is not the subject of this thread though. You have presented no argument that it wasn't the Democrats and Harry Reid that caused the shutdown. They could have easily funded the things they are shutting down and fought later about funding Obamacare.

Ah ,sport, Sowell got it wrong. The Constitution gives the House the power to originate REVENUE bills, not spending bills.

For a bunch of people who proclaim your knowledge of and dedication to the Constitution, it sure looks like you never bother to read it. If you had any integrity you would check out Article I yourself and post a correction, but I doubt you can correct yourself on a misstatement of "fact".

And while we are at it, you look petty silly coming into the CDZ and using derogatory an inflammatory language to begin with. Compounding it with factual error makes you look even more sophomoric. Look it up.

The hundreds of thousands of government workers who have been laid off are not idle because the House of Representatives did not vote enough money to pay their salaries or the other expenses of their agencies — unless they are in an agency that would administer ObamaCare.
:clap2:
A point widely overlooked by dembulbs that are hell-bent on blaming repubs

The Senate chose not to vote to authorize that money to be spent, because it did not include money for ObamaCare.

:eusa_shhh:`

If America was bankrupt, would they just come out and state it, or do it little by little?

Whether it would work or not we are already borrowing too much for what we have. We can't afford another Big Government program.

Democrats blamed the Republicans and vice-versa. No one, and I mean NO ONE stated the obvious, that the Supreme Law of the Land, the US Constitution states that the Congress has the power and authority to issue debt-free currency that would bypass our friends in the Jewish owned and run Federal Reserve.

That does not mean that the democrats shut down the government. That claim is nothing more than a blame game. Both sides shut down the government; that is a fact. The house passed bills that the senate is unwilling to pass and the senate has passed bills that the house is unwilling to pass. It takes two to tango. It is literally not possible for one house to shut the government down without the other house unless the outright refuse to sign anything (and that is not the case here).

The question was never and should never be who shut the government down but rather whose demands are not reasonable.

Right now, they both are as the republicans making this about Obamacare is asinine to say the leas and the democrats (who should have had the high ground here because of republican idiocy) are refusing even to come to the negotiating table in one of the most asinine moves I have ever seen the senate do.

Constitutional FAQ Answer #125
<<Previous Question | Question Index | Subject Index | Constitutional Index | Next Question>>
Q125. "On the Checks and Balances Page, it says that a legislative check on the legislature is that only the House can originate revenue bills. I've been told that only the House can originate spending bills, too — is this true?"
A. In my opinion, the Constitution is unambiguous on the point: "All bills for raising Revenue shall originate in the House of Representatives" (Article 1, Section 7). Thus, I've listed the House's "original jurisdiction" over revenue bills (laws that affect taxes) as a check. The House, however, views this clause a little differently, taking it to mean not only taxation bills but also spending bills.
The plain language of the clause would seem to contradict the House's opinion, but the House relies on historical precedent and contemporaneous writings to support its position. In Federalist 66, for example, Alexander Hamilton writes, "The exclusive privilege of originating money bills will belong to the House of Representatives." This phrase could easily be construed to include taxing and spending. The Supreme Court has ruled, however, that the Senate can initiate bills that create revenue, if the revenue is incidental and not directly a tax. Most recently, in US v Munoz-Flores (495 US 385 [1990]), the Court said, "Because the bill at issue here was not one for raising revenue, it could not have been passed in violation of the Origination Clause." The case cites Twin City v Nebeker (176 US 196 [1897]), where the court said that "revenue bills are those that levy taxes, in the strict sense of the word."
However, the House, it is explained, will return a spending bill originated in the Senate with a note reminding the Senate of the House's prerogative on these matters. The color of the paper allows this to be called "blue-slipping." Because the House sees this as a matter of some pride, the Senate is almost guaranteed not to have concurrence on any spending bill which originates in the Senate. This has created a de facto standard, despite my own contention (and that of the Senate) that it is not supported by the Constitution.
