Depending on where you live, your age and other factors it may or may not make sense to migrate to where the jobs are but when to migrate to a lower tax state is a much simpler problem. Establish residence in the target state prior to Jan. 1st but otherwise as late in the year as possible to minimize SALT from the state you are leaving. That much is clear, what is not clear at least to me is the following:

What kind of non-resident tax on workers will be on the ballot in how many states? In IL, MA, NY and NJ this will make sense, on the left coast it will not make sense.

How can residency be established in a housing shortage and how can the old house be unloaded when very many people are trying to get rid of their old house in a housing glut?

Any ideas on how this is going to work out?
