The Tea Party & American History Education

The Tea Party clearly stresses the importance of knowing American History: In fact, the main page of the Tea Party Patriots web site contains an ad in the upper right corner of the screen that reads "Teach U.S. History in Our Schools!"

In light of a recent study that found U.S. school children lacking terribly in their knowledge of U.S. History (see Associated Press, "Report: Students don't know much about US history," 14 June 2011), how does the Tea Party feel about:

1) the proposed congressional bill H.R. 1891, which will eliminate the Teaching American History grants program issued by the U.S. Department of Education?

2) the de-emphasis of history curricula in general caused by No Child Left Behind, which stresses reading and math skills at the expense of other classes, such as U.S. History?

At the beginning of 2009, the GOP/Tea Party decided they would make revising history a priority, as well as renaming everybody within the American political spectrum. It’s no revelation that the GOP complicated it’s party identity because of the Bush administration’s abject failure to end on a positive note. The GOP got busy encouraging Republican voters to call themselves “Conservatives”, “Conservative leaning Independents”, “Tea Partiers”, or “Libertarian/Conservatives”...anything but “Republicans” for the time being. GOP strategists and pundits also revised the Democratic identity as “Progressives” and “Liberals”, then went on to portray “ them as Nazis, Communists, Socialists, godless, tyrants, elitists, parasites, and anti-American. The GOP even encourages the incorrect use of the epithet “Democrat Party” whenever possible, instead of calling the DNC by it’s correct name…the “Democratic Party”

Between 2009-2010, Republicans absorbed their new identities as Tea Partiers. By November 2010, the GOP/Tea Party efforts to blame everything on Obama reached critical mass, and though Republicans were still not necessarily proud of George Bush, Republican Tea Partiers fancied themselves as revolutionary thinkers, out to create the faith based Jeffersonian utopia that liberals and progressives kept from happening…instead of the losers from 2008, which is all that Tea Partiers are. That’s great political strategy, but the shocking part is the acceptance by Republican Tea Partiers of the illusion that Bush era Republicans in Washington now…are finally serious about cutting spending this time.

Since tea party folks are by and large constitutionalists, it's kind of a stretch saying they don't know American history. Of course, American history is a broad subject. What parts do you think they don't know or have revised?

What is it you don't like about smaller government, lower taxes and increased personal freedom comrades?

personal freedom leads to personal responsibility.

Then it's just work work work.

And work is a Four letter word.

I became a history teacher in 1977.

Off the top of my head I'd say that the USA really declared was on history education sometime in the late 60s.

Let's just say I'm not counting on the tea party folks to teach anything like real history, shall we?

I've read enough musings on US history from supporters of that know-nothing group of nitwits here on this very board to know they're sincerely American patriots, but they're also sincerely wrong about pretty much everything about US history.

No offense guys, but you're dumber than bag of bricks and ignorant as the day is long

But all that hard works allows you the blessing of providing for the moocher class like the socialists want.

The American Educational system has been sabotaged by domestics terrorists: the Progressives.

The UFT needs to be treated worse than an organized crime family and should come to the same end. In NYC, we spend $18,000 to "graduate" morons 5/6 of the time.

Atlanta? Former Atlanta superintendent fires back in cheating scandal - CNN.com

The UFT and Department of Education have inflicted more damage on our society than Al Qaeda could dare dream

They are constitutionalists who know little about the constitution other than the second amendment and mixing it up with the Declaration of Independence

True. Particularly since the Constitution says nothing about what size the government should be, what’s an appropriate amount of tax, or that either have anything to do with ‘personal freedom.’

Of course this concern for ‘personal freedom’ gets thrown into the dumpster when it comes to 4th Amendment privacy and search and seizure rights, or 5th and 6th Amendment due process rights, not to mention 14th Amendment equal protection rights.

And why no concern for violations of ‘personal freedom’ by state and local governments, the most flagrant violators of civil rights.

Lastly, I read all these statements and opinions from ‘constitutionalists’ about what the Constitution should mean or how it’s interpreted ‘incorrectly’ yet not a hint of case law cited in support.

Which means they could run circles around your ilk who totally disregard the Constitution altogether.

Could we have an example? Then we could discuss
