1840-1847 a very interesting history piece giving rise to the fiasco that actually ensued with Captain John C.Fremont and other officers involved in the takeover of California from Mexicos General Jose'Castro( a distant relative).
Actually Mexico wanted to cede California to England for debts owed...the US under President Polk had a strong interest in California as well as Oregon...
Thus the pseudo war with Mexico began and ended with the Republic of California becomming a state!

Nah...actually Spain should have kept California after Mexico won Independence...General Jose' Castro was a Spanish officer who stayed in California after Mexico won Independence...with the fiasco of one Captain Fremont he threw up his hands returned to Mexico and then on back to his homeland of Spain! Now we have a weird California a mix of perverts and illegal aliens!
