McClatchy Washington Bureau | 10/07/2008 | New U.S. intelligence report warns 'victory' not certain in Iraq

I bet this wont come out until after the election.

New U.S. intelligence report warns 'victory' not certain in Iraq
More on this Story
McClatchy Newspapers
WASHINGTON — A nearly completed high-level U.S. intelligence analysis warns that unresolved ethnic and sectarian tensions in Iraq could unleash a new wave of violence, potentially reversing the major security and political gains achieved over the last year.

U.S. officials familiar with the new National Intelligence Estimate said they were unsure when the top-secret report would be completed and whether it would be published before the Nov. 4 presidential election.

More than a half-dozen officials spoke to McClatchy on condition of anonymity because NIE's, the most authoritative analyses produced by the U.S. intelligence community, are restricted to the president, his senior aides and members of Congress except in rare instances when just the key findings are made public.

The new NIE, which reflects the consensus of all 16 U.S. intelligence agencies, has significant implications for Republican John McCain and Democrat Barack Obama, whose differences over the Iraq war are a major issue in the presidential campaign.

The findings seem to cast doubts on McCain's frequent assertions that the United States is "on a path to victory" in Iraq by underscoring the deep uncertainties of the situation despite the 30,000-strong U.S. troop surge for which he was the leading congressional advocate.

Most intelligent people know that when a story is littered with things like "could unleash" emphaisis on "could" and highly placed 'sources' who spoke on 'condition of anonymity' no one who wants to stay out of federal prison is going to reveal the contents of an NIE that is classified and mean only for the POTUS.

So this reporter is trying to give himself some gravitas he does not possess by wrapping his bullshit in a cloak and dagger story straight form Ian Flemming. His first sentence is the only relevant one and it basically say what anyone with a little knowledge and common sense already knows; The situation in Iraq is still volatile and something *could* happen to start up the sectarian violence again. DuH!

Im sure you have better things to do like tell stories out of school about an organization who increases the effectiveness of our Democracy by registaring voters.

The Surge is not working and the Gov will sweep that info under the table so the American people wont have that information at hand to make heir decision on this election.

Its an NIE report you clowns

This article is basically a snooze. To paraphrase: "Things are looking better in Iraq, but they could get worse again. This could matter to McCain or Obama." Wow...hand this guy the Pulitzer double quick.

Hey...I have an idea for Landay's next article...in November, we will elect somebody President...it could either be Obama OR McCain...or even a 3rd party although thats very unlikely. Whoever is elected will make decisions regarding our country. SHOCKING, I KNOW!!!!! I'd reveal my sources, but they are VERY high up and don't feel comfortable being named.

lol.

yes, it sure is a snooze to hear a suggestion that the surge isn't working...

can't imagine what importance that might have to americans...or the world.

people...

The surge has worked. Period. Sorry to break up your "bash the military" thread.

Thanks for playing.

We need to find a strong person to take over who is capable of playing the dictator there.. we did it once and we could do it again...

National Intelligence Estimate - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

National Intelligence Estimates (NIEs) are United States federal government documents that are the authoritative assessment of the Director of National Intelligence (DNI) on intelligence related to a particular national security issue. NIEs are produced by the National Intelligence Council and express the coordinated judgments of the United States Intelligence Community, the group of 16 U.S. intelligence agencies. NIEs are classified documents prepared for policymakers.

Wow...that was pathetic. Either you have the reading comprehension skills of a large rock, or you're so ridiculously biased that you can't absorb what the article was saying. For your sake, I'm going to hope its a reading comprehension issue and help you out...rather than just laughing and pointing at you.

The article does not state that the surge is not working, which was your asinine claim. To the contrary...the article states:

major security and political gains achieved over the last year.
Iraq is enjoying its lowest levels of violent incidents since early 2004
77 percent drop in civilian deaths in June through August 2008 over the same period in 2007
U.S. officials say last year's surge of 30,000 troops, all of whom have been withdrawn, was just one reason for the improvements
truce declared by anti-U.S. cleric Muqtada al Sadr, the leader of an Iran-backed Shiite Muslim militia
enlistment of former Sunni insurgents in Awakening groups created by the U.S. military to fight al Qaida in Iraq and other extremists

What the article DID state...was that despite all of the success that has been seen over the past year...things could get worse again.

Which is a bit like saying, "Its sunny day, but it could rain again in the future - so we shouldn't throw away our umbrellas just yet."

Wise...but hardly shocking.

Do you pseudo intellectuals know what classified means? And the penalty for revealing such information to people without the requisite clearance?

What a maroon.

The surge was called a surge for a reason.

It was supposed to be temporary.

Us who knew it meant
escalation were torn a new one by the likes of you.

It now appears that the only thing that will keep the Iraqis from attacking each other is if we leave our troops there indefinately.

Can you say escalation?

That means the "surge" as failed.

These are people who NEVER wanted to be a country.

They have battled each other
fr centuries ove religion and power.

If we leave next year they will resume.

If we leave 100 years from now they will resume.

The truth hurts when you live on a consant diet of lies huh guys?

You are a really nasty little person arent you?

what is the matter that little brain cant produce one fact?

Have no fear folks.

As effectively as the government can lie and the media can swear to it, the fact is that the truth will always out.

If Iraq is really knitting together and can reconstititute a viable government, the numbers will show it.

And if they fudge the numbers (like we did during Viet Nam) I still have every confidence that the returning vets will (as they did during Viet Nam) tell their friends and neighbors what they experienced.

Have complete faith in one thing only...the truth will inevitably make itself known.

Personally I'm rooting for Bush and company to be right on this issue.

I'm not counting on it, but I'm hoping my cynicism is entirely misguided.
