Barak Obama surges in US presidential polls

September 20, 2008 12:00am
DEMOCRATIC White House contender Barack Obama has reversed a Republican surge in national polls.

The results point to an electorate swayed by the financial crisis, and signs that Sarah Palin's star may be dimming.

Senator Obama, who has focused attacks on rival John McCain's capacity to rescue the US economy, led 49 to 45 per cent in a poll of likely voters nationwide by Quinnipiac University.

A CBS/New York Times survey put Senator Obama up by 48 per cent to 43 per cent.

The trend was confirmed in Gallup's daily tracking poll, which had Senator Obama ahead 48 to 44 per cent, the first time in two weeks that the Illinois senator had a lead beyond the margin of error.

Senator Obama's momentum set the stage for the first of three debates with Senator McCain next week and might represent the last chance to cement a lead in the tight race.

"Senator Obama is right back where he was before the so-called convention bounces, with a four-point lead," said Maurice Carroll, director of the Quinnipiac University polling institute, near New York.

"The Democratic discombobulation after the selection of Governor Palin as GOP running mate seems to be steadying."

With economic turmoil ricocheting around the world, the Quinnipiac survey suggests economic arguments may be swaying support towards Senator Obama.

So... Obama sticking to the issues and not stooping to McCain/Rove personal politics is paying off in the polls, eh?

Good for him! Good for America!

That's laughable.

As for the OP - we have this little thing called the electoral college, which McCain still leads although he's still far short of 270.

Alas for Obama and Chrissy, many swing states are tending towards McCain.

Oh, and suck on this:

An MSM push poll showing Obama up by anything less that 10-15 points is bad news for the Left. Douglas Wilder, bitches.

The more people see of McCain and Palin, the better off we are. I look forward to the debates, and Palin's abuse of power investigation.

I'm not sure which map you're looking at Ninja....in whose reality is McCain still leading in the electoral college?

which swing states do you think are leaning towards McCain?

OH Mccain only has a 2% lead
FL 3% lead

not exactly a landslide is it?

why do you keep screaming Douglas Wilder? who is he and why do you think so highly of him?

and push polls a political bullshit...

Palin has had little to offer since the big speech, where she was unquestionably impressive. Since then, she's retold the speech many times, and has said or done little to keep her momentum going.

Beat him! Beat Him Down Obama!!!

Obama Attacks McCain on Regulation, Lobby Ties | The Trail | washingtonpost.com

By Dan Balz
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Barack Obama unloaded on John McCain this morning at a rally in Daytona Beach.

The Democratic presidential nominee used McCain's own words to attack him as an opponent of federal regulation of the banking industry, said his rival's support for partial privatization of Social Security could jeopardize retirement security for many Americans and fought back on the question of which candidate has closer ties to Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.

Speaking at Bethune-Cookman University at an event highlighting his campaign's efforts to appeal to women voters, Obama invoked the current financial crisis by taking aim at an article carrying McCain's name in the current issue of Contingencies magazine, published by the American Academy of Actuaries.

In it, McCain wrote, "Opening up the health insurance market to more vigorous nationwide competition, as we have done over the last decade in banking, would provide more choices of innovative products less burdened by the worst excesses of state-based regulation."

"So let me get this straight -- he wants to run health care like they've been running Wall Street," Obama told the audience. "Well, Senator, I know some folks on Main Street who aren't going to think that's such a good idea."

I'm looking at the one with toss up states omitted, as any maps that includes them at this point is worthless:

RealClearPolitics - Electoral Map

Obama has a serious chance of losing a lot of states that we Rethugs weren't supposed to be competitive in this year.

MN, WI, MI, PA - Obama could lose every single one of 'em.

Not to mention OH, which the Dems were supposed to take overwhelmingly due to GOP corruption.

Ohio has its highest unemployment rate in 23 years, and a Democrat in the statehouse. Democrats are not losing Ohio.

Palin and McCain are such bad campaigners that the Republicans are trying to hide them from the press. They can't hide forever. McCain is going to lose.

I'll donate $20 to the Brady campaign if McCain loses Ohio.

McCain wins, you donate $20 to the NRA-ILA

Deal?
