I voted for Romney in 2012. Obama being an actual Marxist rather than just running as one like the other Democrats did was enough to get me to vote for "other." Before that it was HW in 1988.

There is an old idea to this problem that even Dick Nixon and George McGovern agreed to support in their '72 presidential contest, and Dick and George didn't agree on much that year.

The current system of 79 means-tested welfare programs would be abolished, and the GAI would take their place until recipients become eligible for SS. This may be an idea whose time has come precisely because the US economy has been automated to such an extent there aren't enough jobs being produced for everyone to earn their keep.
