I said Down Low....The black male culture in many parts of the U.S. is hypermasculine. Men would be socially ostracized or punished for being openly gay, particularly in many inner city areas. Gay black men have among the highest suicide rates in the U.S. You see the same thing in Hispanic cultures, and in any other arena where men feel the need to be excessively masculine in the front that they present to the world, or where there are negative social repercussions for being gay (like in the military, in fundamentalist Christianity or in the Mormon church). Men self-identify and report their sexuality as straight because they fear the ramifications of being openly gay.
Also, it's not being on the low down, it's called being on the down low. Damn son. This book has been out for 10 years. Time to figure out the phrase you are mangling.
