Democrats couldn't have asked for a better wedge issue. Re-litigating contraception. This almost assures more women votes for Democrats..and not only in the Presidential elections.

More and more one can't help but wondering..do Republicans really want to lose?

Democrats in control of the U.S. Senate rejected an amendment Thursday from U.S. Sen. Roy Blunt, R-Mo., that would have permitted employers to refuse to cover health-care costs contrary to their religious beliefs -- mainly birth-control and abortion-inducing drugs. The amendment went down on a 51-48 vote.

Absolutely!!!!! Obama is coasting...

Meanwhile, Sheriff Arpaio is birtherizing and Hannity is editing/doctoring Obama's college tapes...

I wonder what James O'Keefe is up to...

They must.

I've heard that the great Cuban hope for Repubs is pretty damn dumb in reality. Rick Perry caliber dumb actually but getting himself involved in this bullshit is beyond stupid for the presidential hopeful.

Blunt is simply irrelevant. <shrug>

The GOP is pretty stupid for going down this road...

The GOP is completely stuck in absolutist mode right now, the Democrats know it, and they're gonna soak this for all it's worth. It makes it easy for them to appear to be the adults in the room. Even better for the Dems, the GOP is showing no signs of getting past it. The Rush/Hannity/Norquist all-or-nothing, we-must-crush-them routine is driving the party right off the freakin' cliff.

Their probable nominee is doing everything he can to pretend he's an absolutist too, but no one is buying it. What a mess.

.

So a defeated amendment that few have heard about is a winner for Democrats? Is that proof that Dems have nothing to run on, after 5 years in power, or what?
Given the Dems have elected Joe Biden as VP they shouldn't go around calling people dumb.

Pretty stupid seems understated.

The question is, why would they do it? Why are they making these social issues their focus when it is, clearly, not what the American people are concerned about?

Are they actively trying to get their approval rating into negative numbers?

This is a very crude page out of the Lee Atwater/Karl Rove playbook. It's a wedge issue, but they people they are trying to excite are already going to vote for them. This will, however, turn off independents completely.

They've run and won on these social issues before, but it was a different time in so many ways.

Yup, as if we weren't already getting turned off before...

You understand the amendment would have turned the clock all the way back in history to 2 weeks ago, right? Before then waivers for religious conscience were routine. Why should an org with a particular belief be forced to do something contrary to it by the gov't? Ever hear of the Establishment Clause? Freedom of religion?
The Left is utterly stupid for failing to see that most people support religion, even if they themselves are not religious. It is only the idiot and clueless left that sees them as "angrily clinging to guns and religion."

Not really.

It's just here, they've gone off into the weeds. Contraception is a settled question.

Blunt's amendment succeeded in destroying more than a million jobs.

Mission accomplished.
