The Repug have their backs to the wall and they know it

We need to increase the # of taxpayers to EVERY ADULT CITIZEN EARNING EVEN $1,

That goal was achieved a long, long time ago. Every American who earns even $1 of earned income pays 7.65% of it to the federal government in taxes.

Ahem.... no.. they do not pay it in income taxes.. lest we remind you of little things such as earned income tax credits, deductions, and please remember that ~48% of adult citizens are paying zero in income taxes... this is not paying on every dollar earned as income by every citizen...

Nor is it right that some are paying differing percentages on dollars earned...

Hell.. if we had a flat tax across the board at an arbitrary number of 20%, no loopholes, no deductions, no exceptions, etc on every dollar earned... that would be equal treatment under government... and ensuring every dollar earned by every citizen is taxed for income tax the same

Every working American pays 7.65% (or 15.3%) of their first 106,000 of income from labor in taxes. Things such as the earned income tax credit may or may not refund portions of that.

Of course, that's not a flat tax - it's a regressive one where people who make the most pay the least percentage.

The repugs have 2 choices:

Raise the debt ceiling or raise the debt ceiling.

They know damn well that if they do not raise the debt ceiling the ensuing economic collapse means:

First, their 'base' is going to lose wealth like never before. It'll make the 2008 collapse look like boom times. They will have no base. The GOP will be KAPUT!

Second, once the economic catastrophe is evident, the President is just going to invoke the 14th amendment and order the Treasury to pay it's bills anyway.

Third, they'll lose so much support (their former base will be too busy filing for bankruptcy to care about politics), that Obama will dictate the upcoming budget - and it will be a strictly Democratic one.

Their only real choice is to raise the debt ceiling and take the best they can get for a budget deal.

Sure, they'll lose face with their 'core', but what does that matter? Who else are these wingnuts going to vote for? By the time 2012 comes aroung the GOP spin machine will paint the whole fiasco ever color but true.

All the repubs have to do is pass a bill with a VERY SMALL increase to the debt ceiling, say enough for 3 months, along with enough spending cuts that in 3 months when its time to debate it again it may be easier to not have to raise it.

Also, if hte repubs in the house pass their own bill then it will put the onus on obama and the democrat senate to pass it...if they dont pass it they will be responsible for not raising the ceiling not the repubs.

Im just wondering when/if the repubs will figure this out.

This is just dumb. The Dems have added $5,000,000,000,000 in debt in just two years, haven't even passed one budget, campaigned on fiscal responsibility and claimed raising the debt ceiling to be a "failure of leadership", and now demand that we add another $2,000,000,000,000 to the debt to restore fiscal sanity.

The GOP is in trouble? Yeah, right.

That is patently false. The budget can be balanced without another dime of revenue.

Only in Libertarian Lala Land.

yes it can be done but what are we going to shut down in the process?

I have plenty of suggestions on how to cut spending to balance the budget on our current revenues but many people wont like the cuts, i'll list a few

  1. Suspend all politicians pay and compensation.
  2. Close down 50% of overseas military bases.
  3. Cut all US aid to foreign nations.
  4. Cut all subsidization
  5. Defund ObamaCare
  6. Make all public sector employees pay a minimum of 50% of their health/dental insurance benefit costs

Those 6 will get us pretty darn close (obamacare will give us a huge budget defecit as it comes into effect in about a year.).

Lemme guess... public school?

1. Employees pay 4.2% in FICA withholding, not 15.3%... Employers pay 6.2% in FICA withholding, not taxes.
2. Employees and employers pay 1.45% in MED withholding.
3. EIC is a welfare payment that is not affected by FICA or MED.
4. The U.S. tax code is a progressive tax code, not a regressive tax code.

8537 doesn't do math or logic.

How bout closing all those tax loopholes??

Might be nice to have all those companies like GE with their money offshore to pay taxes.

Bet Immelt would shit a cow.

I have no problem with tightening up the tax code on these fronts.

And funny, you never here the left-wing whackaloons shitting themselves over GE who BTW, makes a gazillion $$ and pays $0.

Lemme guess... public school?

Public grade school, private high school, public undergrad, mix of private and public grad school.

1. Employees pay 4.2% in FICA withholding, not 15.3%... Employers pay 6.2% in FICA withholding, not taxes.

Those are taxes, and the 4.2% is a temporary cut that will expire in December unless Republicans decide to extend it. And how do you know they are taxes? Because they are used to fund government expenses.

2. Employees and employers pay 1.45% in MED withholding.
3. EIC is a welfare payment that is not affected by FICA or MED.

EIC isn't affected by FICA - but it may or may not offset the FICA taxes an individual or family pays.

4. The U.S. tax code is a progressive tax code, not a regressive tax code.
You should read what I wrote instead of making assumptions. I said that the payroll taxes are regressive - because they are. FICA is only paid on the first ~106K. Therefore:

If you earn 10,000 - you will pay $420 in FICA - 4.2% of your income.
If you earn 106,000 you will pay $4,452 in FICA - 4.2% of your income.
If you earn 1,060,000 you will pay $4,452 in FICA - .42% of your income.

That's a regressive tax.

The 14th Amendment:

"The validity of the public debt of the United States, authorized by law...shall not be questioned."

Congress already spent the money...now it's time to pay. NO QUESTION ABOUT IT!

The 14th Amendment does not allow the president to go around Congress and incur more debt and you never thought that it did until you heard one of your uber left wing Huffington mouthpieces tell you it allegedly does. Stop letting other people think for you.
we have the debt already Taz? the debt ceiling is to PAY FOR the debt that congress/this country has incurred through legislation that has already occurred.

it's NOT NEW SPENDING, it's paying for what was already spent.

editec, if this macroeconomy requires stealing money from my paycheck in order to support individuals who do not deserve the smallest amount of aid in order to maintain the economy....

I'D RATHER SEE THE ECONOMY CRASH!!!!!

You wouldn't have a paycheck if not for the establishment of this nation, Anach.

Admittedly, this government has turned into a truly bad government (regardless of what party is in charge, I note) , but your objection to taxation in principle is childish.

Unless you're going to address Social Security and Medicare then there's no point.

We have enough money to continue paying our creditors after the debt ceiling is hit. Hitting the debt ceiling doesn't mean we run out of money.

Those can be adressed to close the gap during the next series of debates (if the reps did what i said and passed an increase to cover 3 months and instituted similar cuts to what I suggested) At the next point they can raise the retirement age to 67 or whatever else we can think of to do with those 2 forced retirement plans.

Not with the tea party canidates but with the rank and file dems/reps it sure is.
