The Remarkable Results of Election 2009

The near-domination of the Republicans in 2009 just a year following the Obama presidential victory is both stunning, and for Democrats, possible foretelling of things to come.

The Virginia Republican victory was expected weeks ago - what was not expected was the overhwhelming landslide in favor of the Republican candidate. This is a state that voted for Obama by a comfortable margin - and now returns a Republican to the governor's mansion by a nearly 20-point margin.

Even more remarkable was the underdog win of Chris Christie as New Jersey's newest Republican governor. Outspent by a 3 to 1 margin by multi-millionaire incumbent John Corzine, the Christie victory was stunning - and even more frightening to Democrats than even their loss in Virginia. Obama expended considerable political capital in the New Jersey race, declaring Corzine his friend and ally, making no less than five personal visits leading up to election day. It appears whatever Obama was selling, the traditionally Democrat state of New Jersey was no longer buying, with Independents moving strongly in favor of the Republican Christie. New Jersey voted for Obama in 2008 by a 15-point margin. The Christie win represents a nearly 20 point swing agains the Democrats just a year later.

The NY23 miracle fell short for Conservatives, though the trajectory of Hoffman as unknown underdog to legitimate contender within weeks of Election Day is a telling indicator of just how powerful the grassroots conservative movement has become in recent months - and how much influence these Conservatives will wield heading into
2010. The loss of a much smaller congressional regional compaign is lessened greatly by the far more crucial state wide victories for Republicans in Virginia and New Jersey. And this same district will see another election next year - look for a far more conservative Republican candidate to be put into place once again.

And let us not forget the repudiation by Maine voters of the same sex marriage law. Yet another telling indicator of a nation leaning conservate yet again - even in a state that voted for Obama by a 17-point margin.

Now we have moderate Democrats across the nation who are sitting in districts or states that voted McCain in 2008. These are the political figures who are most nervous for the upcoming 2010 election cycle. It will be this fear that will now work strongly against Obama's up-to-this-point, aggressive liberal-progressive agenda. Nancy Pelosi now faces a House Democrat mutiny, and Harry Reid hopes to maintain some semblance of control in the less volatile, but no less concerned, Democrat controlled Senate - to say nothing of his own re-election hopes.

2010 is gonna be interesting...

Yes, the 2009 election was good for the Republican Party. Two governors, and the repudiation of a wingnut.

Except I fear the wingnut section of the Republican Party has not learned the real lesson, and will proceed to throw some more surefire Republican districts to the Democrats in 2010.

What i think this shows is we need to get even more involved. Because when we do, we succeed. What we need to do now is focus on supporting candidates and becoming candidates in the primaries so we get our voices heard.

This is going to start up very soon.

True enough - and the framework is already falling in place.

Yea i agree with most of what you say. Even though the true Conservative lost in New York,i still consider Hoffman's run a victory in the end. It's just so hard for a Third Party candidate to win any election. I blame Newt Gingrich and his fellow old school party hacks for that loss. How could they have run a fraud candidate like Scozzafava and expect real Conservatives to support her? That really was a disgrace. Maybe that loss will be a message to the old school Republican Leadership. Stop forcing fraud candidates like Arlen Spector and Scozzafava on us. Lets hope they learned their lesson on that one.

Overall it was a great night for the Republicans though. More & more people are now turning to real Conservatism. The Socialists from both parties have destroyed our Nation at this point. Real Conservatism = More individual Freedom & Liberty. The tide really may be turning. Lets not jump the gun though. The Mid-Terms will be a huge challenge. The Republican Party has a lot of work to do before then. Will they run real Conservatives or more frauds? That's the big question. I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

On head to head races the results were:
Democrats 9
Republicans 2
Independents 1
With the democrats picking up 2 seats in the house
and Republicans claiming overwhelming support.
Democrats would enjoy similar results next year.

Not a bad night for the GOP, not a good night for the Dems, and a kick in the palinista faces.

You are absolutely correct here - the Hoffman campaign really shook the established party elite tree to its core. Hoffman was an unknown, with little actual politicking skill, who in a matter of days following the Palin endoresment, was receiving hundreds of thousands in campaign donations and going from a distant third to near-front runner status. As stated by me and others, a Hoffman victory would have been a political miracle. It almost happened - but not quite.

That being said, NY23 was far from the critical race last night - the New Jersey Republican victory was HUGE. The Virginia victory, based on the enormity of the Republican margin, was HUGE.

And let us not forget - in actuality, Republicans won EACH of those three races last night.

Even in NY23, we had just over 59000 votes for Conservative/Republican Hoffman and 7300 votes for the Republican Scozzafava - that is just over 1000 combined votes more than for the Democrat.

Take that same concept of overall votes though in these three races and the Republican dominance becomes even more apparent.

In the New Jersey race there was roughly 100,000 more votes going for the Republican candidate.

In the Virginia race, there was over 300,000 votes in favor of the Republican.

Last night's races saw a combined Republican advantage of more than 400,000 votes. And what is now worrying Democrats the most is the fact that the over 65 voters, and Independents, both came out strong in favor of the Republican candidates.

The Obama/Pelosi agenda is now facing its toughest opposition yet - the voice of the American people...

"Republican Dede Scozzafava, who dropped out of the race Saturday after right-wing Republican titans backed Doug Hoffman, has endorsed the Democrat in the race, Bill Owens...Scozzafava is just one more Republican woman who's seen her party reject her; Palin and her right-wing friends seem determined to make sure the GOP is small enough to hold NaziCon 2012 in the Wasilla Sports Complex."

"The GOP is telling every moderate Republican across the country is that it doesn’t matter if you’ve been a loyal Republican for decades, it doesn’t matter if you know the district and the people, it doesn’t matter if you fit the district, and it doesn’t matter that you have given decades to the party. It just doesn’t matter. If the teabagging wingnuts and the shrieking lunatics like Michelle Malkin don’t like you, high profile crackpots like Palin and Dick Armey are going to swoop in and back some clown who doesn’t even live in the district and then shit all over the area’s voters, telling them their interests are 'parochial.'"

I think we libs oughtta pool our resources and offer $$$ to Ms. Mooseburgers to go speak for more Republican congresscritters next year.
