More than 70 people were killed yesterday as suspected Sunni insurgents bent on dragging Iraq into renewed sectarian turmoil unleashed a wave of terror attacks against Shia pilgrims. The attacks, the second deadliest since the withdrawal of American troops last December, came as the Shia faithful gathered to commemorate the festival of Moussa al-Khadim, a great-grandson of the Prophet Mohammed and one of their most revered Imams.

The insurgents launched their attacks with apparent ease, despite heightened security, striking as early as 5am with a bomb that struck a procession in the town of Taji, north of Baghdad, killing seven people.

But it was the capital city, as so often before, that bore the brunt of the violence, suffering ten bombings that killed at least 21 people. One struck a Shia mosque, while a second was detonated by a refreshment tent in the Khadimiya mosque as pilgrims stopped for breakfast in the baking heat.

I can not relate to the concept of killing over ideas.

But hey... I'm just a big ol' girl on the subject... I don't even like insults over ideas and that's commonplace enough. Escalating from insults to armed conflict is sad, but it should come as no surprise, given our planets sordid history. And it certainly doesn't surprise this average Joe that the last vestiges of war, as a living planet graduates to become a Sentient World, is over religion, followed closely by politics, especially when the two are mixed. Humanity has always been pretty passionate about their gods and their money.

The big difference for us in the here and now is that secular society in Western 'Civilization' has garnered enough power to pretty much insist that religions refrain from using terrorism and inquisitions to make their point.

Education was the key. Secular Education should be protected and promoted.

I think one of the wonderful things about travel is also realising how similar people are all over the world, regardless of nationality, skin colour or religion.

When one realises this, the whole idea of racism and prejudice based on those factors becomes absurd.

They refer to the same exact Koran as their Holy Book, they are of the same race, region, culture, and they consider each other Muslims. When an Iraqi Sunni blows up another Iraqi Shiite that's about as close to their own as you can get. In other words it really doesn't take much for a Muslim to start slaughtering large groups of people in this case fellow Muslims. This shit is going in all over the Muslim world, not a day goes by without an atrocity like this happening by the hands of a person who considers himself a devout Muslim. Further proof that Muslims, Shiite or Sunni, feel that they have a God given right to go around slaughtering those of other faiths. Even if the difference is practically nothing.

It is. Shiite are considered Muslims which is why they are allowed entrance into Mecca. The argument is over who are the successors of Mohammad. The foundation of being a Muslim, which is belief in Mohammad as the final messenger is the same. When you converted to Islam they made you repeat one phrase, there is no God But Allah and Mohammad is his final messenger. Boom, you're a Muslim.
