Is it representative of racism or is it part of history? I ask because I was reading AOL news and saw a story of a town divided about the flag and what it supposedly represents. What does it represent, in your opinion?

Confederate flags at cemetery fuel ire action Fox News

A former Alabama state senator has sparked controversy after removing small Confederate flags decorating graves at an old Confederate cemetery in his home county.

Attorney Myron Penn has drawn praise and criticism for his actions. He’s also gotten death threats, WSFA-TV reported Saturday.

“The reason why we picked them up is because the image of the flags in our community, a lot of people feel that they’re a symbol of divisiveness and oppression of many people in our community,” Penn told the station.

He brought the Southern Cross stick flags to the city hall in Union Springs. Penn was Bullock County’s first black elected commission chairman, according to a local newspaper.

Union Springs resident Rebecca Atkins said removing the flags shows disrespect for the dead, particularly soldiers who died for the Confederacy.

“It’s not about race or the flag or anything else,” she said. “It’s about decency and respect for the dead.”

Both – depending on context, intent, and perception.

As a matter of law the flags are protected speech entitled to Constitutional protections pursuant to First Amendment jurisprudence.

In the context of private society it's an issue subject to debate between and among private citizens, where private citizens opposed to displaying the flags are not 'violating' the free speech rights of those who support displaying the flags.

It is adolescently provocative, like Che teeshirts, swastikas, flags from the USSR, etc.

There is only one American flag, and that is the stars and stripes. Period. The confederate flag is a symbol of the political and cultural division, and the racial oppression of another era that is long gone. It does not represent anything that exists today. Yes there is history behind it, and if so, display it in a history museum, not in the cemeteries, and certainly not on the buildings/grounds of our capitals.

The TRUE Meaning of the Confederate Flag s Design

Why on Earth would it stand for anything other than a desire for Liberty?? I would suggest that "Old Glory" is the flag of the winners. Why should a conquered people be subject to a flag they fought against. True: history has passed by and there is no call to change the US Flag and frankly I like it....but to call it a Unity Flag is not really correct. To many it represents a loss of Liberty and a loss of self determination. That attitude should be respected.

As for "racist, etc etc"...that's bulldust!!

It represents the fact that there are a lot of people in America who have nothing productive to do all day but snivel and wet themselves over something or other, most often silly nonsense of no importance.

It is adolescently provocative, like Che teeshirts, swastikas, flags from the USSR, etc.

Bingo. Entire subject summed up and no others needed.

It is all in how it is displayed.

The idiots that display it like you suggest can rarely name their daddies, much less document their Confederate heritage.

Nothing is that simple, is it?

...but there are southern people who do want to fly it because of their heritage and know quite a bit about their own history.
Its the ones who demand or cant understand why it shouldn't be flown everywhere.
Those are usually the ones who are still pissed or confused why they cant call others n*gger.

Greg. maybe you didn't get the memo. If not, here it is:

Memo

From: The rest of us

To: Southerners

R.e. - The civil war is over. Get over it.

You almost gotta laugh at the hypocrisy of the pop-culture educated left. Lexington Virginia is a college town and home to VMI and W&L. The entire area in the Shenandoah Valley is steeped in history and the residents take pride in their revolutionary and Civil War heritage. Lexington relies on Civil War tourism and C.W. reinactors have traveled to Lexington for decades to experience the heritage. The problem for college towns is that liberal college professors often take over the government. Almost every business in the Lexington/Rockbridge Va. area is named Stonewall something or other out of respect to former VMI instructor and Confederate hero Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson but the college carpet baggers decided that the Confederate flag was no longer welcome. It didn't matter that the area depended on Civil War tourism and the legend of Stonewall Jackson and Robert E. Lee. College professors have a guaranteed income but small business owners depend on tourism and yet the motivation of democrat politicians is about political correctness rather than making a freaking living. The Confederate flag controversy goes on in Lexington despite historic fact. What flag flew off slave ships during the 200 years of slavery? Should we hate the British Union Jack or should we hate the "Betsy Ross" American flag? Maybe we should nit-pick history for other Spanish, French and Islamic slave ship flags and be outraged by them. Anything is possible when you are a victim of the left wing education system.

Well, the colleges could pack up and move to a town that appreciates the economic activity it brings. Then where would your sentimental Civil War town be?

A politician shouldn't touch ANYTHING at a gravesite. As anything they do is going to look like kissing ass for votes.

If you don't like a flag don't look at it. More you object to such things, more power you give them. More people know certain words upset you, the more they'll use them.

Rebel flags belong on the graves of those that fought in the Civil War. They do not belong as blankets used as drapes. They do not belong on belt buckles. They do not belong as paint jobs on trucks. They do not belong on a state capital--because it represents state sanctioned domestic terrorism. Had the KKK not appropriated the flag then it might not strike as much fear as it currently does. The KKK is alive and well. When you see the rebel flag on a belt buckle, on a truck, or as a blanket used as drapes everybody is aware of what it means.
