There has been much spin from the mainstream media and Democrats about the election that just took place....most of it patently untrue.

One of the primary talking points is the election was not a big deal....that the incumbent President's Party generally loses mid-terms like this all the time.

For the record....that talking point is false. This was an historic defeat for Democrats. Here are the actual numbers per Larry Sabato.

And remember, the Democrats lost 9 seats. Per Larry Sabato.....

"As this table shows, when you consider all midterms since the beginning of the popularly elected Senate in 1914, the president’s party has lost an average of 3.64 seats in Congress’ upper chamber in the off-year."

"But in the sixth year of two-term presidencies, the post-war average has been 5.1 seats, the median five."

Now remember....The Democrats lost 9 Senate seats. This is almost twice the historical norms since the popular vote was instituted for the Senate in 1914. This was not a normal off year election. It was a huge defeat. There is no other way to spin it. To put a finer point on it....there are only two elections since 1914 where the incumbent party has lost 9 or more seats.

Facts are good...but numbers are better. :) Here is a link to the data.
