I truly enjoy reading all those posts that seemingly pit liberals vs conservatives. All the posturing, the jabs, the witticisms where the author seems to be the only one that finds the wit amuse those of us that are registered Independents. Both of the camps seem to either forget or realize that without Independents neither side will win. They need us. Now while it is true that this election I lean so far to the left even I am amazed I do not fall down. It has not always been thus. I know some will find it hard to believe but I even voted for GWB the first time around. While jumping around on line I came across the following and I submit it for your perusal:

If a political observer jumped into a time machine and traveled from January 2008 to today, he might be startled to see McCain's current performance among independents in the latest NBC/WSJ poll. He trails Obama here by 12 points, 49%-37%. What's striking (and ironic) is that McCain's political brand has been forged by his stature with independents -- and it's what always made him the strongest Republican to run in this cycle. Conversely, McCain is doing very well with the GOP base in the poll. He's winning handily among evangelicals, small town/rural voters, and folks in the South. Did McCain make a miscalculation by trying to please the base -- with Palin, taxes, abortion, judges -- instead of trying to win the middle? As NBC/WSJ co-pollster Peter Hart (D) puts it, "If you don't win the middle in America, you don't win the election." If there is an upside to McCain's focus on the base, it's that it may prevent any electoral landslide.

I think McCain had the far right all along. Who else were they going to vote for? So he should have stayed in the middle and lied about Obama being far left. That would have won him independents and the far right.

Instead, he turned off the middle.

McCain isn't the far right. Nor is Bush. If Bush was far right, he wouldn't have infringed on the constitutions, expanded government, increased spending when he decreased tax rates, buy banks and basically tilted our country towards socialism. Bush, left leaning. Compassionate conservative. More like a fraud-conservative liberal. Bush, McCain, and Obama showed that Wall Street needed a bailout rather than let the market do its job. Government intervention. Conservative view, keep the government out. Liberal view, bail them out, intervene. How is McCain far right? On war strategy in Iraq, he was right while Bush (previous strategy) and others (not supportive of humantarian rights in Iraq while sympathetic to poverty elsewhere) were wrong. Yet, McCain is not the right guy for president, nor Obama, nor Bush. If we could elect a man like Bush, we could elect either McCain or Obama and get the same result.

If the gop abandons the evangelicals they lose.

That is why they have to court them and cheat to win.

The truth is the current GOP cant win elections without cheating and if they ignore the evangelicals vote they will just come up with some third party nut bag to vote for and the GOP will have to cheat so big they will get caught.

Now they are stuck and they cant cheat enough to win even with the evangelicals.

They are going to either lose and or get caught cheating.

They are screwed.

What would be best for this country is they lose and get caught cheating.

Then this sick party can die and a REAL party can take their place and be the party the republicans used to be 30 years ago.

A Decent party with solid IDEAS worth supporting and providing a true choice for Americans that keeps our democracy healthy by taking to task my parties failings and keeping them honest.

The two party system actually works when both partys have the ENTIRE US's true best interst at heart.

I hope the Republicans get way better at cheating than the Democrats are. That's what I hope.

Exactly, I'm so tired of hearing people say Bush is far right....he's never been right!

They are all heading for Communism and they are all connected to the very deep left!

the historical evolution of communitarian thinking by niki f. raapana and nordica m. friedrich

Stop right mother fucking there. Just like you don't know what a liberal is, you don't know it when you are looking straight in the eyes of a true right winger. No Bush isn't a conservative. We've been telling you that Republicans aren't fiscally or socially conservative for how many years now? And now that you realize we are right, you want to put them on us? Fuck you.

And Vetter, Larry Craig & Mark Foley proved the party isn't even socially conservative. Bunch of double talk.

Remember, everytime the Republicans accuse liberals or democrats of something, they themselves are in fact doing it. If you hadn't noticed the moral decay under the GOP, then maybe you aught to open your eyes. And if you haven't noticed, the debt doubled on the GOP's watch. Wake up!

Bush isn't liberal and McCain isn't a moderate. Not on the things that matter.

Maybe the GOP should have ran Powell.

I like Ron Paul as far as doing away with the IRS and Federal Reserve. They are the key problem we have in the United States.

But beyond that, I don't agree with him much. Too extreme.

But that sucks because the IRS and Federal Reserve are really the heart of our problems.

Maybe they should stop cheating and jsut allow democracy to deside our elections.

I agree that the social issues should NOT be dictated by the federal government.

States Rights as it is in the Constitution that is simply a piece of paper to SOME Conservatives :)

Right on.

The thing is that these notwits apparently have no memory.

Of course we've been saying that the Republican Party is captured by people who aren't remotely conservative. We've been pointing that out (with example after example) for years.

And their typical response was?

Yeah? Well Bill Clinton got a blow job. You kill babies. I want my guns. wah wah wah!

There are some honest Republicans on this board, though.

Sadly they're so outnumbered, and most of us who are not conservatives are so tired of being personally insulted, and so sick about the lying crap these notwit neo-cons supporters spew, that we tend to forget that the Republican Party used to be a party of decent people with truly conservative viewpoints that actually served our nation fairly well.

Bush is far right. He's never been anything else. Socialism isn't contained on the left of the spectrum, it just has a different label on the other side.

Then your ideas do not match the conservative republican ideals.
