Australian Climate Scientists get death threats : Deltoid

Australian Climate Scientists get death threats

The Canberra Times reports

Australia's leading climate change scientists are being targeted by a vicious, unrelenting email campaign that has resulted in police investigations of death threats.

The Australian National University has confirmed it moved several high-profile climate scientists, economists and policy researchers into more secure buildings, following explicit threats to their personal safety.

Whoever could be inciting people to make such threats? Oh look, here's Tim Blair's response to the news:

But on the weekend we discovered that it only takes a few emails to scare climate scientists clean out of their laboratories. "It's completely intolerable that people be subjected to this sort of abuse," said the Australian National University's Professor Ian Young, who claimed that scientists had been moved to a safer location due to what he described as death threats. "Academics and scientists are actually really not equipped to be treated in this way," he said.

Well, that's not the message we got from their climate rap. "Perhaps," replied reader George Rock, "they shouldn't call people motherf ... ers if they don't want to fight."

Notice that he's not even bothering to pay lip service to the notion that maybe there is something wrong with sending death threats?

Also in that column you'll find Blair, who is the opinion editor for the Daily Telegraph, lambasting a PhD student for pitching a "climate change for dummies" opinion piece to him. Apparently that is insulting to Daily Telegraph readers who all understand radiation physics perfectly.
Westwall already busted the ANU "threats". Give it up. You got nothin'.

And you damn sure can't answer the question in the OP.

If the promoters of man-made climate fears truly believed the "debate is over" and the science is "settled", why is there such a strong impulse to shut down debate and threaten those who disagree?

What are you people afraid of?

LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL.......tooo funny...

"You people" is one guy who posted something on a blog.

Climate scientists are not trying to "shut down debate", nor are people who disagree with the scientists being threatened by any scientists or the intelligent people who accept the scientists' testimony on AGW. Anyone who conducts valid scientific research can get their paper published in a science journal, which is where the actual "debate" on any scientific issue takes place and that "debate" is based on empirical, verifiable evidence, not words.

The reality is that for years death threats are being aimed at climate scientists by the brainwashed rightwingnuts in the ginned up cult of denial that the fossil fuel industry has created.

Threats Sent to Australian Climate Scientists
Science

(excerpts)

The flap began with a 4 June article in The Canberra Times by Rosslyn Beeby headlined "Climate of fear," which reported that "more than 30 researchers ranging from ecologists to policy experts" had acknowledged receiving threatening e-mails. The report didn't name all the scientists but said that some had been moved for their safety. Contacted by ScienceInsider, a spokesperson for the Australian National University in Canberra said, "In response to increasing harassment, including death threats, nine staff working in the area of climate change were moved to a more secure location which requires card access." She added, that "death threats occurred over the course of the last 3 years and were passed to the Australian Federal Police."

University of Melbourne meteorology professor David Karoly, a contributing author to reports by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, says that "abusive e-mails are nothing new." He has received death threats himself and notes that threats "have increased in intensity over the last 6 months."

Also fueling tensions is a 23 May report released by the Climate Commission, which was recently appointed by the government to provide independent scientific advice on climate change. The report, titled The Critical Decade, warns that greenhouse gas emissions must be reduced now if there is to be any hope of significantly limiting global temperature rises. Author Will Steffen, executive director of the Climate Change Institute at the Australian National University, is one of those who received abusive e-mails.

Climate scientists receiving death threats by the hundred
Jul 6th 2010
(excerpts)

US climate scientists say they're experiencing a barrage of hate mail and death threats, and that law enforcement agencies are failing to act. The Guardian has published a series of emails received since the recent controversy over climate research at the University of East Anglia. The emails - uncensored - contain racist abuse as well as threats. Some of those interviewed by the paper say they've received hundreds.

Professor Stephen Schneider, a Stanford University climatologist, said his name had appeared on a neo-Nazi 'death list', but that the FBI had taken no action. Michael Mann, who was recently cleared of misconduct by his university after claims he had massaged figures, recently told ABC News that he had received similar threats, including one urging him to commit suicide. "It's an attempt to chill the discourse, and I think that's what's most disconcerting," he said.

'Climategate' scientists receive death threats
Dec 7, 2009
(excerpts)

Two of the scientists involved in "Climategate" – the e-mail hacking incident at the Climatic Research Unit (CRU) of the University of East Anglia, UK – have been emailed death threats since the contents of their private e-mails were leaked to the world. No further information can be revealed about these particular threats at present because they are currently under investigation with the FBI in the United States.

Many other CRU scientists and their colleagues have received torrents of abusive and threatening e-mails since the leaks first began in mid-November 2009. Tom Wigley, previous Director of CRU and now at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR), Boulder, US, has been horrified by the e-mails he and other colleagues have received. "They are truly stomach-turning and show what sort of venomous monsters we are up against," he told environmentalresearchweb.
You have now used the same article to make a fool out of daveman in two separate threads! Not that it's difficult to make a fool out of daveman - he meets you more than halfway.

Australian climate scientists threatened in carbon tax row
SYDNEY -- Climate researchers at one of Australia's top universities have been rushed to a secure location after receiving death threats, according to an official, as debate rages over plans for a carbon pollution tax. The Australian National University (ANU) scientists had to be shifted following mounting abuse, with threats they would be attacked in the street if they didn't stop their research, said ANU vice-chancellor Dick Young.

Young said the menacing e-mails and phone calls had intensified in recent weeks amid heated public debate over Prime Minister Julia Gillard's plans to introduce a tax on carbon emissions aimed at reducing pollution.

“Obviously climate research is an emotive issue at the present time,” Young told ABC television.

EPIC FAIL
Just remember olfraud I can post underneath you to show you are lying yet again!

So, in summary:

1. No one can answer this question:
If the promoters of man-made climate fears truly believed the "debate is over" and the science is "settled", why is there such a strong impulse to shut down debate and threaten those who disagree?

2. AGW cultists want to kill and imprison skeptics.

3. AGW cultists claim they've received death threats, but they lied.

The Warmers are Necrophiliacs, eugenicists and outright fucking Nazis.

IDK Frank...........gonna have to disagree. I think these people have some pathology in the thought processing...........what lay people commonly refer to as "psychosis". The psychiatrists I work with joke about "the setting screws being a bit off". These people are not unlike functioning alcoholics..........they can get by in life but its all a ruse. They can fool alot of people at work, but dollar to a stale donut their social landscpae is pretty fcukked up. These people are real oddballs if you got to know them...........so its got little to do with experience/education/learning environment but more to do with a pathology in the thinking process........which is quite beyond their abilty to control, although pharmacological aids can be very beneficial.
Why do I suddenly picture a fifth of the people who ride my bus when you say this? I mean, dayum!

And that's becoming more obvious with each passing day.

Yup. If you can't get the masses to voluntarily support your goals -- mandate them by government with the threat of force.

For their own good, of course.

Two of the most shocking cases involved young women who have had little media experience or exposure. One was invited to speak on climate change at a suburban library. Her brief was simple - talk about everyday things people can do to cut their carbon footprint, talk about climate books available at the library (list provided), leave time for questions, and mingle afterwards. The other woman was asked by a local newspaper to pose with her young children for a photograph to illustrate an article promoting a community tree-planting event. She was briefly quoted as saying planting trees could help mitigate climate change. Two days after the article appeared, she received emails containing threats of sexual assault and violence against her children.

No, it's inexcusable.

But you seem to be excusing it when it comes from your side.
