The Pentagon’s $10-billion bet gone bad

So...the Pentagon wasted $10 billion in an attempt to develop state of the art R&D to keep us safer

The Republicans wasted $26 Billion in a Government shutdown because they were still butthurt over Obamacare

1) R&D is not wasted, it is learning.
2) shutdown is one of many laudable tactics employed by those who like our Founders who seek freedom from big liberal govt.

Do you understand?

You funny

Over the last decade, the agency has sunk nearly $10 billion into SBX and three other programs that had to be killed or sidelined after they proved unworkable.
Trying to fashion a shield against a sneak missile attack, military planners gambled on costly projects that flopped, leaving a hole in U.S. homeland defense.
Leaders of the U.S. Missile Defense Agency were effusive about the new technology.
It was the most powerful radar of its kind in the world, they told Congress. So powerful it could detect a baseball over San Francisco from the other side of the country.
In reality, the giant floating radar has been a $2.2-billion flop, a Los Angeles Times investigation found.

In addition to SBX, the programs were:
- The Airborne Laser, envisioned as a fleet of converted Boeing 747s that would fire laser beams to destroy enemy missiles soon after launch, before they could release decoys.
The cost: $5.3 billion.
- The Kinetic Energy Interceptor, a rocket designed to be fired from land or sea to destroy enemy missiles during their early stage of flight.
The cost: $1.7 billion.
- The Multiple Kill Vehicle, a cluster of miniature interceptors that would destroy enemy missiles along with any decoys.
The cost: nearly $700 million.

Expensive missteps really have become a trademark of the Missile Defense Agency. Like as the majority of lastest Pentagon`s research activities.
Whatever the military wants the military gets. None of these projects have been shown to do anything to improve the lives of fellow Americans

I happen to know that one of these projects was killed by Democrats in Congress because they didn't want the US to have a defence against ballistic missiles, so the credibility of your entire OP is suspect.

That's a strange statement, given there has always been a hole in defense against incoming missile attacks. The whole point of trying out these projects was to find a way to plug the hole.

But it's not like "Everything was fine, until this project failed, and now we're wide open to attack".

We've always been open to missile attack.

And it's not really a "misstep". How exactly would you propose we research and design something? If we only invested in R&D on things we already knew conclusively we could do... we wouldn't be doing very much.

So...the Pentagon wasted $10 billion in an attempt to develop state of the art R&D to keep us safer

The Republicans wasted $26 Billion in a Government shutdown because they were still butthurt over Obamacare
pretty much, yeah.

1) R&D is not wasted, it is learning.
2) shutdown is one of many laudable tactics employed by those, like our Founders, who seek freedom from big liberal govt.

When the pentagon starts a weapons program and then the democrats shut it down before it goes into production, Dot.com says the Republicans "wasted" that money. When Iran launches in ICBM at Paris and blows it to smithereens, Dot.com will blame the Republicans for not having an effective missile defence.

So the Pentagon used $10 Billion in an attempt to stop an income nuclear missile, which one ...might... argue would benefit all of society.

The Republicans caused a government shut down in order to try and avoid ever increasing national debt which ...will... harm all of society.

Oh good night that is so accurate.

Just like the housing bubble. In 2004 everyone was screaming about it, and they all said "It's all fine! Don't change it! Don't screw up our perfect system! Don't add anymore regulations".

Four years later "YOU DIDN'T REGULATE ANYTHING!"

Sometimes the oft repeated "Leftism is a mental illness" starts to seem correct. How you can scream we don't need more regulations for years, and then turn right around accuse everyone of refusing to regulate, is beyond me.

Of course these are politicians, which I expect that from them. It's the little leftists that follow them around, and magically think whatever they say is true, even dispite glaring contradictions.... that's what amazes me.

dear, Democrats have wasted $20 trillion, saddled us with $100 trillion in unfunded liabilities, and make no claims about trying to reduce the national debt. All they want is to cripple America and buy votes by selling the nanny dependency liberal soviet state.

Yeah, which is about 0.000000001% of the amount the left has screwed over the entire country with.
